History of Western Civilisation - Wednesday 5th Period: Discussion 1: Introduction and Sumeria

All right, then. I bet you all thought that I wasn't going to make you do the stand-up-and-introduce-yourselves bit. Sorry.

Since this section of the class is all about discussion and sharing ideas, I think we first should share our names. I'm not going to ask why you're taking this class, since I imagine most of you are taking it because History 101 is something of a basic requirement. Instead, tell me what period of history has some meaning for you. A different time than your own, please, if you are historically displaced or from somewhere other than Earth. If you know nothing about another period in history... make something up. Please.

Then we're going to spend the hour talking.

Optional reading I totally gave you all yesterday:

Wikipedia Entry on Sumer -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sumeria

Lyta pursed her lips, considering Janet's question. She finally wrote: It's mostly enjoyable. I'm rooming with Ivanova in 326. She and I have -- let's say -- a bit of history behind us (not that kind of history -- wrong telepath). Learning to adjust is taking some effort. And patience. I've never really been strong on patience.

Janet glanced sidelong at Lyta, then up at Methos. He was busy watching the discussion, and, well, she'd done the extra reading, taken notes, and held up her end of the discussion. He'd survive a bit of note-passing on her part in class.

Ivanova's nice. I'm in 239/240--we have a lot of fun on the second floor. You should stop by some time. So you've got someone you know here? That helps a lot. A bunch of us transferred here together from my old high school, and I don't know what I'd do without them. Patience can be overrated. At least sometimes.

The second floor?

Lyta chuckled quietly with her head lowered, passing a glance to Methos Professor Pierson. She felt guilty not giving him her full attention, but she was still contributing to the discussion as well. She was good at multi-tasking.

You may not like Ivanova much when she gets done plotting. Apparently a couple of your comrades in arms ambushed her last night with a water gun. She was pissed.

Janet raised an eyebrow at the paper Lyta had passed her.

Do you know which two morons people did that? This is what I get for spending the entire night studying. I miss all the good fun.

The second floor has a lot of people on it. We tend to have a pretty active social life. We're the cool floor.

Don't remember her saying who, and I managed to avoid the ambush, so no idea...And I've noticed the second floor always seems to be "buzzing" with activity.

There was a lopsided grin as she passed the note back to Janet.

This could definitely be trouble. Trouble can be fun, though. All right, we like our fun. You can pretty much be guaranteed that someone will be around if you come and visit. Janet's answering smile was definitely mischevious. Ivanova could get her revenge, but she was friends with two world-class pranksters. If she got caught up in it, she knew who to go to for help plotting a retaliation.
