History of Western Civilisation - Wednesday 5th Period: Discussion 1: Introduction and Sumeria

All right, then. I bet you all thought that I wasn't going to make you do the stand-up-and-introduce-yourselves bit. Sorry.

Since this section of the class is all about discussion and sharing ideas, I think we first should share our names. I'm not going to ask why you're taking this class, since I imagine most of you are taking it because History 101 is something of a basic requirement. Instead, tell me what period of history has some meaning for you. A different time than your own, please, if you are historically displaced or from somewhere other than Earth. If you know nothing about another period in history... make something up. Please.

Then we're going to spend the hour talking.

Optional reading I totally gave you all yesterday:

Wikipedia Entry on Sumer -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sumeria
The Electronic Text Corpus of Sumerian Literature -- http://www-etcsl.orient.ox.ac.uk/

Awww, no bigass lecture of doom. Pity.

Well, I don't know if you have Mad Skillz regarding Sumeria. You just might.

(Is deeply amused by recognizing Janet's wowing you with the very points I almost-but-didn't include in what I completely stole condensed from that Wikipedia article for you yesterday. ;-)))

OOC: Hee! That was a very good Wikipedia article. I so loved the lecture.

*pats* There, there. Just think about how you're not going to be able to shut me up when we hit the Middle Ages, because I can then babble about all the Europe-wide things that I'm not going to be able to touch on in the England class.

Sounds like when I took an Arthurian class from an Arthurian scholar -- historian and archaeologist rolled into one. He wanted discussion, but it was sometimes difficult to get a word in edge-wise interject.

[[OOC cookies for getting the Methos/Dr. Pierson thing. :)]]

Yeah, well... I have to admit I'm a Highlander fan. Always thought Methos was the one who should have gotten his own show, not Amanda. After all, takes skill to be researching yourself and never finding...yourself. ::grins::

*embraces* We are so fandom-twinsies. I have to admit, I am a late convert. Until about four months ago I thought 'Highlander' was 'The Immortal' and was thus unrighteously prejudiced against it.

Now I am a total convert/Methos-fangirl.

Oh, dear. I'm so glad you learned better.

Who doesn't watch the show for Methos and Joe? And Amanda too, though she's not the type of character to support a spinoff.

(And have you seen Claudia's ep of HL yet?)

. . . no.

But I really want to. I've only seen Season 5 of HL. I saw the Relic Hunter one she was in, when she was all evil and seduct-y and Greek.

God, she's gorgeous.

You so must see this. It's a sixth season ep. In fact, no Duncan at all! Just Claudia and her boy.

I haven't seen her Relic Hunter ep. Oooh.

So very. OMG.

Wait - I have heard about this one. I think I saw a picture of it. She's all "I'm Scottish and working these clothes". Or something.

And yes, I've seen that Relic Hunter ep six or seven times. I watch too much Canadian television. *pimps out the soon-to-be-American-released 6Teen*

My floor thinks I'm a dyke. Her picture on the wall beside my bed doesn't help. The one in my icon, actually. Only . . . more.

Something like that, yeah. It's been more than a few since I've seen it. But it was actually *quite* good.

Canadian TV rocks. Though I've been unable to watch as much these days. Too much RL, you know?

I'm sure that doesn't help in the least. *snerk* But as long as you're enjoying yourself, right?
