Advanced Journalism (Wednesday, January 11 - 3rd period)

“Good morning, boys and girls. Please sign in as you enter.”

By the door floated a small stack of sheets of parchment.

“Now, yesterday I got to know you three a little better - and Mr. Crichton, Ms. Sullivan, and Ms. Gilmore, I am delighted to meet you. I’m sure we’ll all have a lovely time of it.

Today, we’re going to discuss interviewing, and technique, and then you will get your first assignment. Homework will be assigned on Wednesday, and due by the following Tuesday, though I will alwys accept early work.

Now - interviewing:

First of all, always prepare for your interview. Even if you don’t have much time you have to ensure that , use whatever you do have to make sure that you have recording devices, writing materials, and so on. Keep in mind that the people we are interviewing don't have unlimited time. If you have not done some basic homework, you will be wasting their time, and they won't appreciate it. Good reporters learn quickly that there are no stupid questions - except the ones we could easily have answered with a bit of prior research. If I find that you’ve conducted an interview without researching things first, your grade will suffer.

Secondly: Look around. You can learn a lot about someone based on the surroundings, especially if you're in a home or office. For example, a wall covered with photos of your interview subject shaking hands with prominent people tells you something about his or her ego. A neat or messy desk may tell you something, too. Do not be afraid to scrutinize their photographs and personal articles. You are there to study and write about them, and they should be flattered that you’ve taken such an interest.

Take a photo of the person. Sometimes people even like to ask permission to do so. I understand these muggle devices called, ‘digital cameras’ can shoot excellent-quality moving photos as well. Take advantage of that capability. A photo serves several purposes. You don't have to spend time writing down details of what you're seeing (except ones that you won't be able to distinguish from the images), so you can focus on the person.

Third: Don't be afraid to go in with an attitude. Most interviews are not the kind of confrontations that we've come to associate with journalism, but that’s not to say that confronting your subject in that matter is wrong.

Also remember that the usually interview is about the other person, not you. He or she may ask you some polite questions, which you may of course answer, but try to get to the topic at hand sooner than later. Time goes by fast in a good interview.

Fourth: Listen to the answers, even if your recordng device is getting it all. This may sound obvious, but some interviews are a disjoined bunch of questions that leave obvious follow-up points hanging in the air. Sometimes it's better to toss out a question you've planned to ask in order to delve more deeply into some angle.

Hence, children, your assignment this week is as follows: I would like for you to conduct two interviews by next week, from which you will produce two small blurbs - say, forty to sixty words apiece. One interview should be with someone you know extremely well - a significant other, a close friend, a family member. The other? One of the new children. Someone who you have preferably not met, or else have only encountered a few times.

You’re dismissed early to start your interviews whenever you wish.”

[ooc: OCD threads going are up. Lecture is from here, with some alterations to keep it IC.]

John signs in and makes sure he's out of Callisto's lunging space.

Reminding herself she was doing this for a reason, Callisto came in and took up a position where Rita would be able to call on her if needed.

"What's a muggle?" John asks, frowning in confusion. "Are you from Greenland or something?"

"Why not call them non magic persons then? Isn't making up some weird name for a non magic person more work then it has to be?"

"Sure," John says, shrugging. "Are any of them around here to argue with?"

Chloe takes some notes ("Muggle??" "Be aggressive, duh...") and tries to figure out who she's going to interview.

Rory took excessive OCD notes on the lecture, and mentally began to think of who she would interview.
