Shop Class: [1/11]

Upon entering the classroom the students will find that it has been transformed into a laboratory, filled with various types of chemicals and electronic equipment.

What's strange is that there appears to be a locked door for each student.

"Today's assignment is situational. You have been locked inside this lab by an electronic lock on the door. The door lock itself cannot be picked by any means and you cannot removed the door by its hinges or any other physical means. There is a keypad by the door that controls the lock."

"Today your goal is to find a way to open the door using only what's in the lab and the standard shop student tool kit: A virtual swiss army knife and a roll of duct tape."

[OOC: Feel free to mod whatever you might find in the lab as long as it is not a code to the door or a set of keys. Hints for some possible solutions will be provided in one of the OCD tags below for those students who don't have a background in lockpicking or electronics.]

"Uh, Sam? The assignment?"

Sam looked up and blinked, mind obviously returning from somewhere scientifically complicated. "Huh?"

Mac snickers and points the students and the doors around the room. "Did you forget where you are?"

"Oh, right." She blushed a bit. Nice, Carter.

With a sigh and a forlorn glance back at the experiment she'd just started, she walked over to the keypad and unscrewed the faceplate using the swiss army knife.

When no alarm went off, she pulled the cover loose until it was hanging by the wires and studied the circuitry. She got up, and returned with some spare wire and a spare computer circuit board.

She wired the circuit board into the lock, cut the live wires to the alarm, then to the lock itself. The door opened.

She returned to her experiment.

Mac looked at the professional wiring job, scratched his head and followed Sam back to the table.

"Sam? Did I tell you that I met your um... relative that is teaching here?"

"Oh, really?" Damn, she knew this would happen sooner or later. Actually, she was surprised it hadn't happened sooner. "That's nice."

She resisted the urge to make sure he was still human. "I hope she was friendly to you. She's sometimes ~~extremely evil and tortures people in her ongoing attempt to take over the galaxy~~ a bit shy around new people."

"Oh she was. She called me by my wrong name at first... and I wouldn't call her shy since she showed me this whole spider robot thingie that she's... in charge of."

Mac looks a little frazzled at the memory, he looks over at the circuit board that Sam just wired.

"You aren't... some kind of robot, are you?"

Sam closed her eyes and counted to ten. "She showed you what?"

Figuring it would be easier than an explanation, Sam picked up one of the wires from the table and pierced the pinky of her left hand with it. A small bead of blood began to well. "Nope, totally human, see? I'm just a big geek."

Mac blushes furiously. "I'm... I'm... sorry Sam. It just... Spiders. Robots. You and her... related."

Mac fumbles with a few more words before ending at "...so embarrassed."

"Don't worry about it," Sam tried to reassure him, "we get that all the time--same name, ~~same face~~ , similar features, all that stuff. It's just a distant familial relationship--one of those quirky genetic things that happens in families sometimes, I guess." She shrugged.

"Er, do you have a band-aid?"

Mac snapped back into reality and pulled out the first aid kit. "Yeah well... I should be used to it by now. I mean I met Jack when I was still a kid going to school here, but..."

Mac just shakes his head and pulls out a band-aid from the first aid kit.

"Here you go. Do you need some neosporen?"

"Naah, I'm tough," she declined the neosporen after a quick Janet check.

"That's right, I'd completely forgotten about that!" Sam smiled and wrapped the band-aid around her finger. "Is it weird making the adjustment to being an adult so quickly?"

Mac shrugged. "Technically? It wasn't an adjustment. I left here as a kid to go take care of my Grandfather and (to me) that was 20 years ago. When I retired from my job and came here to teach? Only a couple of weeks had past."

Mac rubbed the back of his bare neck self-conciously. "Weird huh?"

"A little." Sam smiled to herself. It certainly wasn't as weird as going to sleep forty and waking up as a sixteen-year-old in the eyes of the world. Big adjustment. "But time streams would naturally run differently between dimensions, so it makes sense that something like that could happen. This probably happens more than you think."

Mac sighs and rolls his eyes. "Lord I hope not. I liked it better when I could fix everybody's problems with a pocket knife and some bailing wire."

Sam grinned. "Ah, bailing wire. But what about your duct tape? It'll start feeling neglected."

"Well duct tape can't fix everything," Mac says with a little grin

"Blasphemy! Why, Mac, I am shocked! My poor innocent worldview had just been shattered." Sam teased.

Mac does another eyeroll. "Riiiiight. Sure Carter. You must be missing Jack, because you never busted my chops this much last term."

"I'm just more comfortable with the Mac-TA relationship now," Sam retorted. After all, he'd tried to get her to drink Crichton's oil pan coffee two days before. "Aren't you thrilled?"
