Carl Jung - Archetypes, Etc. (Monday, 01/09/2006, 4th Period)

Jenny stood at the front of the classroom. Off to the side, as it was the first day of classes, she had laid out bagels and cream cheese for everyone.

After the students signed in and took their seats, Jenny started today's lecture.

"You're lucky, guys. Today's the easy class. Mostly introductions, plus a little bit about my expectations. Class is discussion-based. That means that your credit comes from participation. Sitting there while everyone else does the work? Does not earn you a good grade."

{{OOC: In other words, posting things like "[character] listens to the discussion around him" or "[character] sits and waits for someone to discuss with" will not earn you your participation credit that day. Jenny's always around to discuss with--and if RL is hurting you, I will accept even one line, as long as it's on the topic of discussion for that day.}}

"Don't forget to sign in every day. I don't see you sign in? You don't get freebie points for attendance, and I think free points for attending class is a pretty good deal. If you ever have questions on the material--or anything else, for that matter--I hold office hours on a pretty regular basis, or you can stop by after class is over."

"We will also be having monthly exams covering all the material learned over that month. Those? Last day of the month that we have class. You can come and check your course grade with me any time. If you're worried about your grade? Extra credit's a possibility. Again, come and talk to me."

"We will be having a final project. This project is worth one-third of your grade, and if you don't turn it in, you will fail the course. Don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to work on it. Besides, you're getting the project instead of a final exam."

{{OOC: Class will remain open for sign-in and discussion comments until I start grading it, usually before the next class begins. At that point in time, I will no longer accept any posts in that thread. When we begin discussion on the final project, however, there will be a specific due date for that (the last day of the term, of course).}}

"Still looking for a TA. You want the job? Great, come and talk to me to apply."

"Now, onto the easy part. I don't know you guys. Introduce yourselves, and let me know why you signed up for the course."

Lee smiles politely and says, "Hello, I'm Lee Adama. I'm from the planet Caprica and I'm currently a junior. Err... anything else, just ask me!"

"Oh...and yes, I'm taking this class because I plan to be a military officer in the Colonial Fleet and having a good knowledge of human psychology will be of great use to me, I think."

"Nice to meet you, Lee," says Jenny. She's used to vampires, demons, and assorted creepy-crawlies, but a guy from another planet? Not exactly normal. Except he looks pretty normal. "So where's Caprica in relation to here?"

Lee chuckles. "That's top secret, ma'am. But I can tell you that we're in a nearby galaxy."

Edward smiles shyly. "Hi, i am Edward. I'm taking this class because it's nice to know a bit more about the human psychology ~~so i can understand other people. People are weird~~ I don't know, it just sounded interesting to me" He smiles again.

"That's a very good reason, Edward," says Jenny, smiling at him. She might have to work a bit to bring him out of his shell, but he seemed like a nice kid. "We're going to be looking at one specific theory of human personality in a bit more depth than a basic class would. Glad to have you here."

Clark raises his hand before speaking, even though its seemingly not required. "I'm Clark Kent -- I'm a freshman, just transfered from Smallville in Kansas, which is...small. I'm in this class, cause, well, it sounded interesting?"

Jenny doesn't laugh at Clark raising his hand. "Interesting is a perfectly good reason to sign up for a class, Clark." Clark seems a little naive, if good-hearted.

Angel noticed a face he hadn't seen before. "Hey, you're one of the new students?"

Lee smiles at the ~~fellow alien~~new student. "Hi, Clark!"

Rory smiled kindly at Clark, recognizing him from the other night in the common room. "Hey, Clark. How're you holding up?"

Angel takes a seat somewhere in the middle of the room, but away from the windows ~~if the classroom has any~~.

"Angel. Um. Guess you could say I've kinda got an interest in what influences us to do what we do."

"Hey, Angel," says Jenny, waving at him. ~~Yes, windows in the psych room.~~ She decides not to comment on his answer. Not like she doesn't have any idea why he said it. "Nice to see you here."

"Glad I got in," Angel said. "Guess there's some perks of being a senior."

He gave her a slight puppy-eyed look. "Is there coffee?"

Anakin cleared his throat. "I'm Anakin Skywalker, senior, from Coruscant, a planet that it is, well, far, far away. My life is going to be spent negotiating with various beings, many of them human. Any class that allows me to understand them better is only going to helpful in the long term."

"Nice to meet you, Anakin," says Jenny, smiling at him. "Good answer."

Anakin grinned at the praise. "Thanks."

Rory smiled. "I'm Rory. I want to go into humanities, writing, dealing with people later in life - not that I don't, um, deal with people now, but I mean like, as a career. And anything that can help me achieve that goal is something I want to devote myself to. This class falls under that heading."

"Hey, Rory," said Jenny. "What kind of writing? And I think your answer is spot-on."

"Broots, I don't like my first name, I'm a Sophomore. Um, I was in the other psych class, the one that started out crazy, and I liked it when it went sane so I'm taking the other psych class. Yeah. Also, gremlins are evil." Broots nodded. His clothes are rumpled and JC is for once not with him.

"Hey, Broots," said Jenny, grinning at him. She hoped he was feeling okay. "Nice to see you back. Gotcha on the gremlins."

"I'm Susan Sto-Helit," says Susan brightly. "I signed up for this class because where I come from the whole place is so lousy with magic that belief can create things. So I thought this class might be an idea."

"Nice to meet you, Susan," says Jenny. "Good reason for taking the class. A large component of archetypes especially involve personal beliefs."

I'm Hamlet, originally from Elsinore, Denmark. I'm taking this class both because it qualifies for transfer credits at my old school in Germany, and because I am curious about what motivates people to commit the deeds they do.

Jenny nodded. This kid? Seemed a little ~~emo~~ ~~depressed~~ thoughtful. "Nice to meet you, Hamlet," said Jenny, smiling at him. "Hopefully we can answer some of those questions for you this term."
