Multi-Disciplinary Self Defense, 7th Period

Duncan stands at the front of the classroom. He looks much more serious than has been usual for gym class. He seems already stretched out and limber. Large mats have been lain out on the floor. Several punching bags have been added. A trunk in one corner holds padded safety gear, including helmets.

“Okay, first things first. I’ll read off the class roster, and you raise your hand when I say your name. Angel. Vala Mal Doran. James Ford. Susan Ivanova. Jack Harkness. Cameron Mitchell. Han Solo. Susan Sto Helit. Buffy Summers. Kara Thrace .”

After that is done, he stands at the front of the group. “I want you to take a look through the safety gear. Pick helmets and padding, both for close fighting and fencing. Also, a glove for you to trade off taking punches. Make sure these things fit. If they don’t, I’ll see about ordering new ones once we have you measured. Everybody needs these. I don’t care how good you are, make sure you have fitting ones.” He waits for everyone to choose their gear.

“These go in a locker. Within reasonable limits, I want you to care for your gear. If you need repairs, though, talk to me.”

"Attendance is required. You can't learn if you aren't here *regularly*. If you aren't going to be here, don't waste my time and yours. Detention will be assessed for every unexcused absence."

“For this class, we go a unit at a time, starting with hand to hand. We’ll do a bit of fencing later in the semester, and knife fighting, provided people are interested, with practice weapons.”

“First part of the class goes over technique. Second part is open sparring. If you like, you can stay on late for the second part to go longer. The TA position is still open. If you are interested, talk to me after class. I’ll select one or two TAs depending on the skill levels of those applying.”

“Start off with stretching and warming up. If you have your own routine for that, I want to see it. If you don’t, raise a hand.”

OOC: Please note that I have a stiff schedule, and I understand that you might also. I leave posts open for at least two days for attendance.

Anything to do with gear goes here. The gear is already chosen with an eye toward the build of the students, since he's seen them before, but some adjustment might be necessary.

Angel checks his gear. He's a big boy, so he has to be certain. The gloves are a little tight but he thinks he can deal with it.

Duncan throws him a larger pair of gloves.

Angel tried them on. "Perfect. Thanks."

He smiles. "That's what I'm here for."

Kara is no stranger to this type of gear, and it seems to fit pretty well.

He nods in approval to her, noting that she's familiar with it.

Han picks over the gear, unsure how any of it is supposed to fit. He keeps watching the others who seem to know.

Duncan strolls over. "Like this." He has his own set, and he puts it on slowly so that Han can mimic. He watches carefully to correct any errors or poor fit. "Try to just walk around a bit and get used to that."

Han follows the directions exactly and adjusts the equipment until it's comfortable. "I'm very interested in the knife-fight aspect, sir," he says as he moves around, getting used to the feel.

"Hand to hand first. And keep in mind, a trained fighter will usually be able to take an untrained fighter. Form is important for a reason."

Han nods. "Yeah, learned that the hard way already. Now I need the form."

Vala, not having actually made it down to the gym Cam apparently lives in, really doesn't know where to begin. She's either used to heavy-duty stop-a-pulse-blast armor, or going without.

She keeps an eye on the other students to try to work it out.

Duncan walks over and makes sure she has the correct pieces. He helps her put it on with an impersonal teacher touch.

Vala smiles, thankful for the help.

Jack picks out a pair of gloves. He's not quite sure what 'fitting' meant, but when he pulled them on they didn't either cut off the flow of blood or fall off, so he figured they would work.

Watching the others put their gear on with the help of the teacher, Susan quickly picks up the idea. It's pretty straightforward, and within a few minutes, she has a pile of gear in front of her and is winding her hair into a bun to fit under the helmet.

Buffy picks up her gear and is surprised by how light it seems and how well it seems to fit.

He must have been talking to Giles.

Ivanova ties her hair up as she looks over the gear. It wasn't exactly what she was used to, but close enough. Soon enough she found pieces to fit with a little bit of adjustment, and looked around at the class to see who else she knew.

Sawyer messes around with the gear, putting it on and approving that it wasn't too tight.
