Tactics of War [Monday, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.]

Eighth walks into her classroom, followed by a handful of her brethren who quickly form up to write "Dr. Samantha Carter – Tactics of War" on the chalkboard. She sits demurely at her desk as her students file in and she stands when the bell rings.

Welcome students to The Tactics of War. It is so nice to see so many familiar faces in class today and also very nice to see some unfamiliar ones. I hope you all had a pleasant holiday break.

I am Dr. Samantha Carter, please call me Dr. Carter. As some of you know or may have guessed, I am not human but a human-form replicator, which simply put, means that I’m a machine who is more than merely sentient. As such, I have been in many battles due to various circumstances and have lived to tell the tale. Please do not worry, however, as my brethren and I mean you no harm yet.

This semester we will be learning in this class about the theories and approaches to War Tactics. Many classes will be lecture/discussion focused and there will be a midterm and a final.

In approximately seven classes, we will be studying examples of specific (yet completely theoretical) battle situations in which you (thanks to the wonders of my technology) will be able to speak with the theoretical hero and/or villain who was there during the battle and made a key tactical decision.

I hope each and every one of you leaves this class with a bit more ingenuity and cunning and will face the crises and dark situations of your young teenage years with greater courage.

Now I have two activities for you:

One: Introduce yourselves to your classmates by telling us your name, year, and your favorite cliché during battle scenes in film and television.

Two: Fill out the following survey. I will be the only one who sees your answers, so be honest. *looks specifically at the SG teenagers* I will know if you are not.

And before I forget, my office hours are Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Now get to it, ladies and gentlemen!

2. It seemed like the perfect course to follow as I want to become a fighter pilot.
3. I hope to join the United States Air Force.
4. I was in the group that accompanied Coach Ash to the dorms. We faced hundreds of zombies during it. Does that count?
5. Tactician. One single mind, using a scarce amount of supplies can overcome the greater numbers if he plays his cards right.
6. Front line.

2. To help me with the running of my army, to facilitate my revenge against Xena.
3. I lead an army. I'm already in the military.
4. Yes.
5. Brilliant tactician, although preferably you'd have both.
6. Yes.

1. edward.elric@fandomhigh.net
2. I thought it might be useful.
3. I already am, I'm a State Alchemist with the equivalent rank of major in the Amestris Military.
4. Quite a few, although they were personal battles and usually not to do with any wars.
5. ...uhh. I guess a brilliant tactician is more useful because they can usually pull things off without a substantial loss of life.
6. Front line, I don't like sitting around.

1. havocthecat @ gmail.org (IC: janet.fraiser@fandomhigh.net)
2. Because I'm interested in studying tactics.
3. Yes. As you well know.
4. You already know the answer to this, and I don't believe I'm allowed to divulge classified information to you anyway. Even if you already have it.
5. Brillian tactician. Overwhelming numbers don't necessarily mean a thing if the guy on the other side is smarter than you.
6. Behind the scenes. Unless I'm needed on the front lines.

Re: Survey

1. mparker@fandomhigh.net
2. Because I think war is a good way to study strategies for dealing with enemies and rivals in everyday life also, I may have to kill a few people to secure my international business empire, and I need ideas.
3. Not especially, no. I don't take orders well.
4. Zombie weekend counts, right? I shot a lot of them. And I've broken a couple people's bones on occasion. Sometimes even on purpose.
5. Numbers can be defeated if they are in the wrong place, time, or position. A brilliant tactician can manipulate the other side into shooting themselves.
6. I prefer behind the scenes, because there's much less chance of getting blamed. But I'll take the front lines if it's the only way to finish a job.

2. Because it will be useful for my future career. Plus, my CO would probably have growled at me if I didn't.
3. I'm a Cadet at Space Patrol Delta. Someday soon, I'll be a Power Ranger.
4. Only in simulators.
5. Brilliant tactician. The right kind of thinking can lead to victory even when you're surrounded by Krybots the enemy.
6. Front line.

1. Alanna.Trebond@fandomhigh.net
2. I wish to become a Knight and battle tactics are something that is very important.
3. My worlds equivalant, yes.
4. When I was sixteen, a war broke out between my country and a neighboor, I saw combat then, yes, nearly lost my arm actually. I've also been in many duels.
5. A tactician. It doesn't matter if you have a milion soldiers, without a good plan, they'll just work against each other.
6. Front line, unless I'm hurt, then I'll be in the back, recovering my strength and healing others.

1. Your email: anakin.skywalker@fandomhigh.net
2. Why did you sign up for this class? Because the Separatists don't look like they're going to go away through negotiations. War's coming. I need to be prepared.
3. Are you interested in joining the military? We don't have one. Also? Jedi. We're kind of the military and the diplomatic corps wrapped in one badly dressed package.
4. Have you been in any battles? Yes. Both in the cockpit and hand-to-hand.
5. What is more important, greater numbers or a brilliant tactician? Tactician, assuming the brilliant tactician knew he was facing greater numbers.
6. Would you consider yourself someone who would be on the front line or behind the scenes? I think I do a little bit of both.

2. Seems like it would be a useful class to take considering the state my world is in now.
3. Yes, of a sort.
4. Yes.
5. Tactician. With a great mind leading you then others will follow.
6. Behind the scenes. My mother doesn't want me to get hurt.

2. To keep an eye on you. To learn a diverse range of battle tactics so I can kick your ass back to the galaxy you came from.
3. Yes.
4. Yes.
5. A brilliant tactician. Although the greater numbers help to keep the tactician in the back, where s/he is safer and more effective.
6. I refuse to answer this question on the grounds that you already know the answer. Front line.

2. I signed up because the topic is fascinating. Much can be learned from history.
3. Already have. I was a commander in the EarthForce.
4. Several.
5. A brilliant tactician is indispensible; greater numbers are just nice.
6. The front lines. I'm not a diplomat. I tried. It ended with broken bones.

2. Well, one of these days Aunt Keli's going to make me come home and actually, you know, rule the duchy. I think some knowledge of tactics would be important.
3. Technically, I own a military. A small one, (Three guys, a horse, and a blunt sword) but nonetheless. And they don't let Duchesses fight wars
4. I've reaped souls in battle. I've done battle with the Death of the Universe. Not as such, no.
5. A brilliant tactician. (See above, re: my army.)
6. Behind the scenes. The ultimate in behind the scenes.

2. This was the exact sort of thing I came here to learn. I'm from a family of merecenaries, I've been trained to fight, it's what I can do best. Tactics is just one of many important aspects of warfare, if not the most imporant. If I'm going to lead men, I want them to have the knowledge that I bloody well know what I'm doing.
3. Yes. Either official or unofficial. Or merecenary.
4.Yes.
5.A brilliant tactician.
6.I'm a front line person. I can fight. Why waste a perfectly good extra gun?
