MWF Language Classes

All language students:

If you have requested to join a class, consider yourself enrolled. Class rosters will be updated throughout the week. Remember that Friday is your last day to ADD or DROP a class.

Because we have so many new people, all vocabulary quizzes are postponed until next week. We will still be doing sign-ups for class presentations this week: I would like to start those in two weeks.

I will cover last week's lectures during lab hours this week, except for Friday: this Friday's lab hours will be a showing of Wings of Desire, open to all interested students. I strongly encourage European language students to attend.

Office hours will be a [livejournal.com profile] game_of_you.

[OOC: There is a comment posted for each class to this entry. Please post your class participation beneath the class you're taking. Am working: will play when I can. This is mostly for students to interact.]

Yes. My name is Max Fischer. I'm transferring from Rushmore Academy, by way of Grover Cleveland High School. I'll always be a Rushmore Yankee at heart, however, so I'd appreciate as little mention of my public school background as possible. A semi-complete list of my previous extracurricular and curricular activities is on my profile, but allow me to highlight two areas of interest to me: 1) I was President of the French club for four years, and 2) I saved Latin.

Thank you for your attention. I look forward to adding to my considerable abilities by boning up on the Classics.

I began by petitioning the students at my former school. Since I'd built such a rock-solid platform (thank you, Debate Team Captain award), I managed to convince 438 students -- aged 8 - 17 -- that Latin was not what they refer to as "a dead language". [Max uses air quotes here.] Then, I lobbied in front of the PTA, the school board and the curriculum committee.

Of course, I did it all for love. Meaning: all for naught. At the time, I had yet to be smitted with the tongue, as I am now. The reward for my efforts with Latin, however, was being dumped flat on my anyway. So, it was pointless in the end. And now grades 7 through 12 have to take it as a required course. And someone kept slashing my bike tires.

Hey all...

I'm taking this class because Latin is actually based on another language called "Ancient". I'm told that knowing one or both may come in handy one day.

So, you know... carpe diem and all that jazz.

Radek plops down into his chair and stares at Sheppard. Every so often he mutters to himself in Czech and shakes his head.

I forgot this last time, so: I'm Charlie, 'm from Manchester, and I'm taking this because I took Latin at my old school and I figured it'd be better than a bunch of new languages. And I kinda like Latin.

Hello. My name is Ivanova. I chose to study Classics because a passing aquaintence with Latin is usually a benefit in any field, and learning any language makes interacting with other species slightly easier. As well, Uncle Yossel is guilting me into learning Hebrew and, as he calls it, "reclaiming my roots".

Rogue is obviously tired this morning, though not hungover as some of her classmates seem to be. Her travel mug of iced tead in her gloved hand, she follows the teacher's instructions. "I'm Rogue. I'm taking this class because I feel that in my likely future line of work, it'll be good to know several different languages. It's certainly not because I'm a mornin' person."

Logan Huntzberger, here. I'm taking this course to learn about the Early "Classics" languages - I really think it will help to prepare me for "following in my father's footsteps" when I attend Yale. You know - all that academia and such.

Thomasina walks in, sits down and settles in to listen to the latest round of introductions.

I may or may not have introduced myself last time around...it was early and the coffee hadn't yet entered my system. So--

I am Julian Sark, and I am taking this course because the vocation I hope to follow necessitates a knowledge of many languages. Even if Latin or classical Greek are no longer 'living' languages, enough modern languages are based on them to make them worth knowing for extrapolation purposes.

I'm Connor MacManus. I'm taking this class with my brother, Murphy ([livejournal.com profile] teenaged_twin. From Ireland, moved to the states a couple years ago. Ma insisted we learn several languages when we were young, and I'm fascinated by words of any language. That's why I'm here. One can never be exposed to too much language.

Hallo, I'm Sonia, resurrected transferring from 16th century Wallachia, in Romania. Latin is something of a 'grandfather' language of my native tongue, vith Romanian being a derivative of the Eastern Romance languages (which themselves are deviations from Vulgar Latin). Erm, I suppose that's the long version of vhy I chose to enroll. In short, zo, I have always been interested by the languages of the Classical societies, and think I could greatly benefit from them as such. There's also the fact that half of the sacred texts back in Wallachia are in Latin, and I can't begin to decipher them in the least.

Hi. Um, my name's Donnie, and I guess I missed the signup for this class. I'm going to just guess that this is okay.

I'm from Middlesex, which is pretty much as suburban as you can get. I...well...I've had some problems. If I seem like I'm a little old, it's 'cause I was held back. And I...well, I guess that's all you all really need to know.

Hi, I'm Kate.

I used to go to school, in DC, but my family was a little stifling, so I came out here.

I thought Indo-European sounded interesting.

Lane Kim. I'm Korean-American and my mother is way strict when it comes to "religion" and "purity" and "family honor." So, I'm studying Asian Languages. I'm sure it will be okay, won't it? Really?

Hey, guys. I'm Jubilation Lee, I'm Chinese-American, I'm sixteen, I'm a mutant, and I came here because I wanted to transfer to a school that wasn't going to get blown up by a supervillian every Tuesday. That about covers it, I guess.
