Professor Chaucer's Office, Tuesday

Professor Chaucer is in office for a very brief time today. Anyone who needs to speak to him will find him sitting at his desk staring out the window. He looks tired and worried.

Angela taps softly on the professor's door, carrying her poem and two wrapped packages.

Geoff looks up at the knock and smiles. "Lady Angela, come in." Standing, he moves around the desk to give her a hug.

"Oof," Angela says happily as she hugs him back. "Merry Christmas, Geoff. How have you been?"

"I'm leaving before class tomorrow, so I wanted to give you my sestina. I'm sure the meter is all screwed up, but I did the thing with the repeating words."

"And these are for you, too," she continues, handing over a soft package and a harder, book-shaped one.

He opens the packages, laughing delightedly at the shirt. "Thank you, Angela. They're wonderful. Here, I actually have something for you, too."

Opening up a drawer in his desk, Geoff pulls out a small box (http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/danaedark/1363.jpg).

"You're welcome. I figured the shirt would make sense for an English teacher, anyhow."

She smiles at her gift. "Oh, cool -- I love charm necklaces. I got the best jewelry this Christmas. Thank you."

"You're welcome...I'm glad you like it." Geoff grins, looking a great deal happier than he had when Angela came in. "Do you have plans for the holiday?"

"I'm going home for about a week, but I should be back on the 30th. What about you?"

He shrugs. "I might leave for a few days, just to get out of town and clear my head. But not for very long. I've got a lot of work to do to get ready for the next term. Is Marty going with you?"

A cloud crosses Angela's face. "No. My parents are separated, and ..." she flails her arms. "I don't know what her deal is, but my mother told me to come home alone, so I have to do that," she sighs. "Family stuff gets weirdly complicated sometimes."

"I'm sorry, Angela." Geoff gives her another quick hug. "I hope your time with your family turns out to be better than expected. And if not," he adds, grinning a little, "At least you know that you'll back here soon."

"Yeah, that's true. And other than the missing Marty, it shouldn't be that bad." She does not look convinced.

"I should get to work," she says with a sigh. "Happy holidays, again, if I don't see you before I go."

"Marty! Come in." Geoff stands to wave Marty inside, smiling when he mentions a gift. I was going to have it delivered, but I'm glad I waited."

Marty hands over the book to Geoff with a little grin. "It's more of a joke gift, really. But I thought you'd get a kick out of it."

Marty opens his package and is quite pleased. "This is great Geoff. I haven't seen a book that went into this kind of detail. I don't suppose you've been keeping up with your target practice lately?"

"I'm glad you like it," Geoff says, shaking his head a little in response to Marty's question. "No, I've been a little lax on that lately. Maybe next term, we can go practice together sometime. You can make sure I still remember how not to shoot people in the arse."

He grins, unwrapping his own gift, and then laughs out loud. "This is great, Marty. Thanks." He reaches over and gives Marty a hug. "Happy Christmas."
