Journalism Class - Monday September 12

Spider's cat is draped over one shoulder, smoking as usual, when he stalks into the classroom. He's carrying a box under one arm labeled, 'Gavin' and limping slightly.

"Nice to see so many of you here already," although his tone isn't exactly encouraging as he puts the box on the desk and dislodges the two-faced cat. "Take dictation. Anyone who doesn't have their homework in by Wednesday," and he turned, watching his words appear on the screen behind his desk, "will be forcibly ejected from my class."

Turning again, he scowled at the room at large. "For the new arrivals, I'm Spider Jerusalem, your Journalism professor. I don't want to be here and I hate you. Accept those two facts as being both incontrovertable and impersonal and we'll get on just fine. Thus far, I've been relatively lenient with my students but 90% of your grade is going to be on class participation and we haven't seen much of that so far."

Spider folded his arms and leaned back against his desk. "Every student who walks through those doors this morning is going to stop and address the class as to why they are taking Journalism this semester and what they expect to get from it. Assistant?" He looked over the top of his glasses at Phoebe and her bruises. "Have you been to the clinic for those yet?"

"Nope. I have been too busy plotting a messy revenge for the person/thing who left the bruises on me."

Hi everyone, I am Maia Rutledge. I am from Seattle Washington and I joined this class because... well because I think I would be a good journalist because I know what is going to happen before it happens. I think that is an advantage to any journalist.

"No bodies and, if you're involving him," gesturing at Jayne, "no subtlety either." He eyed her again. "If you're not going to go to the clinic, there's a bottle of the purple stuff in the desk. That ought to hold you over for a bit."

Spider looked at her thoughtfully. "... just when I think I've seen it all..."

Phoebe nods and goes and gets the purple stuff.

"By the way...where did you end up after Rover attacked us?"

Spider pursed his lips. "There was nudity involved. Are you sure you want to know?"

The best way to be invisible is to be in the middle of a rabid crowd any normal person would avoid at all costs. Thus, journalism.

And no, I'm not sensitive about my skin color. Yes, I'm green all over. No, I wasn't exposed to some noxious chemical as a child. Yes, I'm sure you've seen seven weirder things before breakfast. No, I don't want to have your love child. Any more questions?

(OOC - this will make a lot more sense when I get around to making an icon that actually shows a green person...)

I'm Xander Harris, and I'm here because if I don't take three classes, they'll send me back to my last school. And there was this whole thing with a giant snake that was gonna happen at graduation, so... I'd rather skip that.

I'm taking Journalism because I can't do much, *she looks down* but I think I can do this, and maybe do it well because I think I could have a passion for it... maybe... I don't expect to get anything from it, I hope to get a better understanding of what Journalism is, and a better idea of how to be a good Journalist... *Caro tails off*

Phoebe raised a brow.

"I ended up in a dishwasher. Alex ended up in a gym locker. Where did he drop you? I'm making notes on all of this."

With his new book bag, Chihaya slips into class and takes a seat in the back. He clears his throat to address the professor and the class. "I am taking journalism because I thought it would be interesting to write about real world events that will be read about the people I'm writing about."

Giving the class a bright grin, he sits down and pulls out a notebook to start writing.

*Paige comes in* I'm Paige, I'm doing journalism, well until something better comes up, I had to take 3 classes and at the time this one of the better ones, so erm I might be here next week, I might not.

Is it my turn? For those of you I haven't met already, I'm Chloe Sullivan, and I'm taking this class because I love the subject. I've wanted to be a reporter for about as long as I can remember, except for when I was four years old and wanted to be a ballerina. *laughs* So, this is my favorite subject, and it just seemed stupid to not enroll.

Rogue rushes again, nearly late from English. Again. "Uh, I'm taking journalism because I find it interesting. I don't have a particular reason apart from that." She takes one of the empty seats.

"I've seen weirder things before breakfast, but rarely were they so articulate." Spider waved toward a seat. "I think you'll do very well here."

"Best reason yet." Spider lit a cigarette and passed another to the cat.

"Be angry a lot," Spider advised her. "Drinking heavily helps too."

There was a mildly baffled pause as Spider attempted to sort this cheery optimism into his normal world-view and to those for whom such things are audible, there is a distinctive 'snap' coming from the direction of his imagination. "Very... good."

"Whatever floats your boat, kid." Spider shrugged and waved dismissively. "Just be sure to let me know officially so I can take you off the roster."
