Art Appreciation, Lecture #12

Callisto stood in front of the class. "Okay, guys, it's been a fun ride hasn't it, but like all things this too shall pass.

"Today's our last lecture and in case any of you hadn't noticed, our teacher has upped and vanished on us, without having even the courtesy to leave any notes about whether we passed or not. So here's what we're going to do."

"Write one hundred words on what you've learned from this class, whether or not you wish to continue next semester and if this class influenced your decision to do so. I will pass these along to the next poor fool they get in to teach this subject, so that even if the powers that be declare this semester a wash you'll have some sort of footing with them."

What I learned in Art Class by Martin Q. Blank

First I learned that soup cans are not Art, but paintings about melting clocks and dogs playing poker are art. I've also learned that our art teacher has an evil twin; Lisa Cuddy has a really bad temper; that according to the cosmo quiz (http://quiz.ivillage.com/cgi-bin/cosmopolitan/tests/indulgent.cgi) (that we were forced to take) that I'm a smart pleasure taker and "can also delay gratification. I'll tend to wait to get to know a drool-worthy dude before hooking up with him or make sure I really want something before making a purchase."

Finally I learned that if you are going to ask the TA to pose naked, you better have some expertise in hand to hand contact or be able to run really-really fast.

My experiences in Art class by JGjr

This semesters art class has been... interesting, and certainly not what I had expected. I have learned that when you paint with anything other than your hands, the result will look like a green duck. I have also learned that there are people who believe dogs playing poker and elvis in velvet is great art. I have made several pieces of art, including a sculpture of Janet Fraiser and a painting of teachers getting it on.

I have had fun. I could have done without the naked teacher incident though. I am going to take Art next year as well.

It's been an interesting semester but I don't think I'll be taking art again. Apparently the aesthetic varies between worlds to the point I am incapable of grasping what Earthers think is art. Or at least what Coach Ash thought was art. Experimenting with various media has been interesting. I apparently have no talent in addition to my lack of taste.

This semester I have learned that the field of art is subjective enough that any monkey with half a brain can apparently teach it. I've learned that incorporating pirate eye-patches into any project is a plus, and that macaroni can be more than dinner.

I've learned how to make ornaments for a Crissmass Tree, and that it can be far scarier to have the teacher himself model for nude drawings than to watch him suggest that his lovely, yet deadly, TA do the same.

Most importantly, however, I've learned that this class was indeed the easy "A" I thought it would be a worthwhile endeavor, and I am definitely signing up for art class again.

Art. By 6.

What I learned from this class is that art is something that is not only found in canvas, but in life. Found objects, performance, the act of living creates art. In art, we find true freedom, and in freedom, we crush our oppressors. They can never take art from us! Never! I would very much like to continue next semester, as I will still be here, not having escaped. I look forward to many weeks of class here, learning about Art and not preparing a concentrated air strike against the administration. Give my regards to Coach Ash and I wish you the best, also, Callisto, in case I never see you again.

What I learned in Art
by Stark.

In Art I learned about art and that John Crichton is not really all that crazy for a human, judging by the teacher. Lots of art. Cookies are art, and taste better with lots of frosting and decorations. And music is art, if you say so. And so are movies, I think. If the teacher says so. Mostly art is art if you say so, or if the teacher says so. At least that is how it seems. I would take Art again, I think. It was entertaining and not at alleducational.

I be takin' this class initially so I could learn what pieces o' art be stealable valuable on the black market most appreciated by the discernin' collector. I be discoverin' that art be more than just paintings o' royals lookin' constipated or various trinkets made o' gold. Thar also be photography 'n movies 'n Elvis on velvet. I learned that I be not terribly good at makin' me own art, but that an eyepatch be makin' everything look a little better.

And that askin' Callisto t' pose nekkid is just a foolhardy way t' spend yer time.

If I learned anything in Art Appreciation, it's that you really should find out more about your teacher before you make a commitment to a class.

Apart from that, the varied media and assignments available in studio classes made for some interesting projects. Anyone who painted a green duck is a capitalist pig victim of peer pressure. The assignments in which we were supposed to make something that evoked a certain emotion in viewers were particularly good though I admit a certain fondness for the macaroni necklaces.

I'm not sure if I'd want to take the class next term. It largely depends on whether there will be a fez to steal who the teacher is and their outlook on art in general.
