Into the Black [Tuesday evening]

Anakin was in a mood.

He opened the door to the flight shed with entirely unnecessary vehemence and began tinkering with the flight sim, hoping the familiarity of fixing something would calm him down.

It was still in pieces when the rest of the club arrived two hours later.

"Um," he said, rubbing a grubby hand through his hair. "I was trying to set this up to be like the Viper that Lee talks about, but it turns out it's gonna take a little bit more work. If you're handy with a toolbox, feel free to come over here and give me a hand. If not--" he gestured at the movie screen, "I've found a sneak preview of some holo called Snakes on a Plane. I don't they're actually flying the plane, but the lead actor ~~reminds me of someone I know~~ ~~scares me to death~~ is supposed to be pretty good."

He turned back to the simulator.

Cally signs in.

Ivanova signs in. "Oh, Anakin, I hope Jack called you back. We're all ready for lessons."

Anakin nodded. "He did. I got a little caught up in pageant rehearsals of doom to get back to him last week, but I'll give him a call tomorrow and set up logistics and stuff."

Han signs in.

Kiki signs in.

"Wow, that's quite a mess," Lee says honestly. "But I might be able to help," and he grabs some scary looking tools.

Anakin pointed at a couple of pieces. "This goes here, that goes there," he said. He looked at where he had been poking at the flight control panel, consulting his blueprints. "Does this look like Viper-y to you?" he asked.

"Err...not exactly, but close enough, I think!" he says, tinkering with levers and such.

Anakin frowned. "Normally I'm very good at this," he muttered, taking off a panel and poking around in a knowledgable way ~~that the mun doesn't understand~~. "Today? I'm distracted."

"You okay, Anakin?," Lee says, looking concerned.

"There have been better weeks," Anakin, master of understatement, replied. "Some bad news from home last night, some misunderstandings this morning." He shrugged. "You know how it is."

His eyes lit up as he listened to Cally's announcement (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhigh/454005.html?thread=21027445#t21027445). "Want to fly it?" he asked.

"Hey, whoa, yeah!"

"Erm, maybe this is just me being practical and stuff, but... how about you guys, maybe, fly the real thing?"

Anakin looked up, a gleam in his eyes. "It's flight ready?" he asked.

"It's flight ready. I'm not certain if it's properly sealed for space flight, but flying it in atmo should be fine. We just, erm, might wanna run a few tests before doing anything fancy. 'Cause, like, Bridge helped put it together."

"Sounds great." He grinned at Cally. "Count Lee and I in."

"Maybe we can set something up over break or something. Yeah. Just let me know. You can check the ship out on the dorm roof whenever."

Anakin nodded, looking happy. "I'll be going home for some of the break," he said, "but assuming they ever let me leave again, I'd love to fly it."

"I'd love to see it fly! It hasn't ever before, and it's been stripped down to pieces twice. Should be great!"

"That's the best feeling, isn't it?" he replied. "Seeing something you built working properly?"

"Nothing like it. Wouldn't go so far as to say the best feeling, but it's definitely amazing." She stops for a second and then taps her chin with a finger. "Speaking of amazing, I promised myself I'd drop in on Anders' training tonight. The club won't fall apart if I take off, right?"

[ooc: *stabs spotty notifications*]

"Mmm, the best feeling is flying it," Lee says with a grin.

Anakin smiled. "Flying something you built yourself," he countered. "Because it's all only you that's keeping you in the air."

He waved at Cally. "We'll survive without you," he said. "Say hi to Anders for me."

"Known we were gonna do this I'da brough a tool kit."

Han pokes around the pieces.

"Anakin? You got a hydrospanner? Cause your tributary fasik box is hooped."

Anakin tossed the hydrospanner towards Han. "Here you go," he said, going back to poking at the flight console and cursing.

Han goes to work on the box and finally gets it purring to his satisfaction.

He checks the other bits of it. "Looks like you've disconnected the confluence valve from the intake channel too."

Anakin ran a hand through his hair, making it stick up. "I'm normally much better at this," he muttered, frustrated.

His hands rotated a piece of metal, components moving together without conscious thought. He looked down, pleased. "Like that," he said, moving to put it into the flight sim.

She'd started watching the movie, but, distracted by all the noise of the work, started watching the sim-fixing operation.

Which totally had nothing to do with all these boys getting sweaty and greased up. Absolutely not.

She's also very glad her broom is marvelously low-tech.
