Introduction to Western Literature, Lesson Eight

Tuesday, December 13, 1:00PM FST

I'd like first to apologize for canceling last week's class. Because of that, we'll be covering Bede's Life of Cuthbert today and hearing end-of-term projects next week. Grades will be posted on December 21. If you haven't yet spoken with me about your end-of-term project, today would be a very good time to do so. Also, anyone who owes me make-up work will need to submit it by the end of the week or by next Monday in RL time in order to get credit for it. Obviously, there will be no make-up work available if you miss next week's class, so please keep that in mind.

[Lecture] Bede was an eighth-century monk from Northumberland in England. He was one of the most important intellects, and most prolific writers of his time, and in fact he is the only Englishman written about in Dante's Divine Comedy. Bede's most important work is his History of the English Church and People, but he also wrote a number of histories, biblical commentaries and hagiography.

[Discussion Part I] Bede's Life of Cuthbert is written as a biography, but in a religious context. Discuss your opinions about how this religious context can serve both as an aid and a hindrance to understanding who Cuthbert really was.

[Discussion Part II] Choose one chapter from the work and tell the class why it in particular interested you, and what you learned about Cuthbert from it.

[Extra Credit] Discuss the importance of the religious context in relation to the societal norms and political culture of the time in which the work was written. (Extra credit can be applied to make-up work from missed classes if desired.)

The following students have unexcused absences which require make-up work:

[livejournal.com profile] miss_thomasina: two absences [discussed]
[livejournal.com profile] ___lily_evans_: four absences [discussed]
[livejournal.com profile] studentwillow: five absences

The following students have discussed and recieved approval for their final projects. If you are not on this list, contact Chaucer immediately. Projects will be presented in class on December 21. [OOC: Folks, I'm serious! If you're name's not on this list, then I don't recall approving your project! Come talk to me asap!]

Religion can often be overwhelming in terms of both fiction and non-fiction, sometimes to the point where everything else gets ignored because of it.

Sonia listens to the discussion, though to a close observer it might seem her mind is elsewhere- almost as if she hasn't been sleeping well. Not wishing to appear rude, she makes an attempt to focus all of her attention on the class.

[[ooc: All I know about Cuthbert and Bede is that I'm at a university with colleges named after them both *g*]]
