Criminology

Grissom hands each student a munchie of their choosing before class, and asks them all to sit down. Yeah, he thinks he's pretty funny.

He then gives a lecture outlining the argument for legalizing marijuana and against.

Discussion: Do you believe marijuana should be legalized? If so, to what degree? Why or why not?

Death and Dying

Grissom passes out the study guide for the exam ~~that you don't really need~~, which will be Monday, and takes a seat.

There is a display up around the class, highlighting various depictions of death in art.

"I'd like you all to choose one that interests you, and discuss why, either with myself or with a classmate. When you have completed your discussion, you are dismissed. See you on Wednesday."

John takes some cheese puffs. But not a lot.

"I think marijuana should be legalized only for medicinal purposes. Now, admittedly, I haven't done a lot of research on this but from what I have seen, it does seem to greatly help ease the pain of those who are severaly debilitated by pain. If it's dosages are controlled by a doctor and the patient is checked frequently, addiction can be avoided. But, there are always exceptions to this rule and I can see why legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes would have it's con group."

"Good thoughts, John. Thank you. And have some more snacks if you like."

Angela takes a big handful of cheese puffs, wrinkling her nose at the orange stain on her fingers. "I think marijuana should be a legal controlled substance, like alcohol or cigarettes. ~~And I'm not just ssaying that because my ex was, like, the stoner of all time.~~"

"There are certainly good arguments for that opinion," he replies. "Thank you, Angela. And you can use the sinks in the back to wash your hands, if you'd like. Don't use the eye wash though, unless you also need a shower. It's a bit... unstable," he says, perhaps hinting he may have had a run-in with it as some point.

Maia passes on the cheese puffs and grabs a handful of M&Ms.

"I say legalize it across the board just like cigs and alcohol. The only reason the government is against it is because they cannot tax it readily, its to easy to grow for personel use. If it was made accessible it would do no more harm to a person then drinking a beer. It should have the same legal consequences if your over the limit of it such as with drinking and driving, things like that."

"I don't think it should be legalised. It's still drugs, even if they're considered to a lesser evil. I can understand that people might be allowed to use it for medicinal purposes, like John pointed out, but this should be an exception to the rule."

Chloe happily grabs a handful of M&Ms and listens to the lecture.

"I think that marijuana should be legalized if it's being used in a medicinal way, and being controlled through a prescription. It seems to be helpful enough to warrant its use for medicial needs, and while I know there's a risk that it will be stolen and abused, that's a risk with every drug these days. And it's far safer than some of the medication I've seen commercials for lately. There's some heart medication out there that can't even be handled by pregnant women, because it could cause a birth defect. I don't see any reason why marijuana can't be legalized, and that stuff can."

Harry picks Baldung Grien's death and the maiden" (http://death.monstrous.com/death_and_the_maiden_4.htm), and thinks mister Badung Grien is somewhat obsessed with girls and skeletons. Also he notices that the painting is mirrored, usually the death is on the right. The painting is also known as 'the three ages of women', depicting youth, middle aged and an elder women and the death as an exemple of vanitas and is a medieval way of warning that everything will die and dissapear in the end.

"It's really disturbing, isn't it?" Allie says, walking up to the same painting.

Susan raises her eyebrows at all the paintings adorning the classroom walls, and doesn't know whether to laugh, cry, or run away. Hey, look, there's uncle Pestilince!

"They all make death look so terrifying," she says finally, her voice certainly not shaking at all. "It's funny how fear can colour perception. Death's only frightening because people are frightened of it."

"That's an interesting point. Although from the perspective of those who don't have solid information on the afterlife, fear does seem to be one logical reaction. And not all cultures do fear death, and some even treat it as a celebration. But fear is also a good tool to keep people in line, so you see a lot of it used in Western culture. I'll keep my opinions on that to myself," he says, it would be with a wink if he was that kind of guy.

Callisto looks at the various paintings, "Where are the jazz hands?"

Sawyer chooses 'Tricks of Death' (http://death.monstrous.com/tricks_of_death.htm), "These show that everyman is tempted by death, whether they be rich or poor, good looking or ugly; it doesn't matter who you are, death is always there to hold your hand and guide you to kill yourself." he takes a deep breath, "One that really..stunned me was the 'Younger are concerned' the picture of the baby being led away by a skeleton..It shows that no one is safe from death..We should all be afraid of it."

Stark stopped in front of the "Death as a Friend" painting and considered it carefully.

"This one. It's different. And I like the name. Not supposed to frighten you. Death shouldn't have to be frightening. It isn't, always. It's welcome for some. It's better not to fear it. So much better to go peacefully."
