Daniel's office hours

He's got homework to mark.

He's got finals to write.

Neither of which seem very appealing.

But his copy of Archaeology was. And if anyone asked, he could say that he was reading it for inspiration. Right?

Methos makes a face. "No. Somehow, and I don't know how, although her name begins with 'Janet' and ends with 'Fraiser', I'm shepharding about 20 teenagers to Chicago this weekend. Pity me. I tried to dump it on you, but Janet said it would be, and I quote, 'Inappropriate'." Methos rolls his eyes.

Daniel looked horrified at the idea. "You certainly have my pity," he said. "She's right, though, it would be inappropriate. Any particular reason why they're going to Chicago?"

"Ostensibly, to go to the art institute as a cultural thing. In reality, for Christmas shopping."

Daniel grinned. "Well, if you do actually make it to the art institute, I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself. They've got some great pieces... or at least they did when I was last there, which is a good few years ago now."

"I've been, but it's... been awhile. Apropos of nothing, I applied to be the history professor next semester."

"On top of your duties as librarian?" Daniel asked. "What periods are you hoping to be teaching?"

He rose from his chair and moved towards the coffee maker. "Would you like a cup?"

"Yes, please." Methos sighed. "Possibly on top of my duties as a librarian, although I've tried to make it clear to the administration that I'd be happy to give it up -- and happy to keep it. I'm of two minds. I like working with the books. But I've applied for later periods in the day. Mornings are when the library is usually busy."

Daniel poured two cups. "Cream? Sugar?"

"I've not spent nearly enough time in the library," he said. "I'm hoping to rectify that. I'd love to take a look at special collections, perhaps, one day."

"Sugar, please. Make sure to go into Special Collections with one of the assistants. It... *likes* them. Not me, although at least I've come out. We did lose the Religion professor in there, you know."

Daniel added sugar to one of the mugs, and brought the drinks across.

"I most certainly will do. I'll ask Janet, I expect one day. And I'll make sure I've got my library card on me. I heard about the religion professor. He just never came out, was that it?"

"Well... I think one of the theories is that he was turned into a newt. And I have a salamander that hasn't been hungry in a month -- since I picked it up in Special Collections. So maybe it... ate the newt?"

Daniel almost choked on his first mouthful of coffee. "Do salamanders eat newts?" he asked.

"I don't know. Did I mention that this salamander is on fire? As in, constantly?"

Daniel's eyebrows rose. "No, you didn't mention that," he said. "I'm pretty sure that's not normal for a salamander. But then again, if you picked it up in special collections, it's probably not a normal salamander."

"Exactly. I have no idea if normal salamanders eat newts, but fire salamanders named Dante? I am not ruling out anything at this school. I suppose you don't want to be librarian?" Methos asked, a bit mournfully.

"Uh, I think I'll stick to teaching, thanks," Daniel said, tapping the markbook. "Besides, if I was librarian, then I wouldn't be able to have Janet working there, and do you really want to face her wrath when you tell her that she doesn't have a job there any more?"

"I don't want to face her wrath at *any* time, hence why I'm going to Chicago this weekend." Methos puts his cup down and stands up (he did too sit down at some point!) "I think I have to get home and start packing. Thanks for grabbing the mail. I'll be sure not to push Janet into Lake Michigan or anything. Despite the temptation."

Daniel managed to keep a straight face and not snicker. "I'd wish you fun, but under the circumstances, I think "Good luck" is probably more appropriate," he said. "And I really would appreciate that. I'd quite like her back in one piece, without raging hypothermia or anything."

Methos grinned on his way out the door. "I never said anything about one piece," was his parting shot.

Daniel wondered if it would be a bit too overprotective boyfriend of him if he called her every hour.
