Office Hours - Abnormal Psychology

Jenny sits in her office before opening Study Hall for the day. She's going through class papers and grading everything.



OOC: Psych didn't go up yesterday due to a sudden attack of Real Life. And since the final project is cumulative, I didn't want to just do a movie day for the class and not give you guys any feedback. So a class post will go up today instead. Sorry for the delay!

"Hey, Jack," said Jenny. "Have a seat and tell me what's confusing you about it."

Jack sits down. "Well... I get that the experiment is about people conforming, right? If you're sitting in a room with fifteen people who are all swearing blue is green, are you going to go along with them so you don't look weird, or stand by what you know? But I don't know what to discuss *after* that. It seems like I kind of just say... people are sheep, and then I haven't got anything else."

Jenny nods. "That's the basic point of the experiment. Though they actually discovered that only about one-third of the people out there are sheep in that kind of a situation. You could talk about other situations that involve conformity, or how you'd react in a situation like that and why. Do those work for you?"

Jack makes a face. "I actually learned in one of my other classes that I do kind of conform a bit too much... especially when it's an authority figure. So, yeah, maybe the situations-involving-conformity." Jack shifts in the chair. "I... uh, I also wanted to thank you for letting me do a different essay on the whole what-I-learned-from-being-psycho-for-a-day. Because if I'd had to do that, the paper would have come out something like, 'I learned how to hate and how it felt to want to kill' and I don't want to deal with any of that." Jack's voice shakes a bit. "It frightens me that I know what it feels like to hate that much, to want to hurt people that much."
