Language Classes

All Classes: Use this time today to work on your final projects. Remember, I need a proposal and the date you plan to present your work by the end of class. If you have any questions, ask them today.

You may use the books on my shelves, or the computer terminals in the back of the class to help you in your research.

As I told my classes yesterday, students who took more than one class with me this term may hand in a single final project, as long as it integrates things learned in all classes; for example, if you took Classics and Cat, you might look at the role of cats in Roman myth. The grade for it will count for each class.

[OOC: The final assignment is real; if you don't do it and post it to the appropriate class thread or email it to me by midnight EST on 12/23, your character will get a failing mark on the project. This is not negotiable absent major real-world trauma. Posting "Dream presents an excellent project" or the like does not count, and will earn a failing grade.]

Janet signs in and pulls out the books she'd checked out to herself from the library yesterday. Then she goes over to the classroom shelves and starts to look over the books there. She'll do the research now, and talk to Professor Dream during her independent study, when it will be less busy.

Anders signs in and puts the finishing touches on his project proposal about the use of ancient Greek in religious texts and the similarities and differences between that and the religious texts of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol. Not being a terribly religious person himself, he figures he'll have to do a lot of research even for 200 words, but hey, it might be good for him. A learning experience, even.

He spends the rest of the class drifting between the bookshelves and the computers, notebook in hand, scrawling down notes; he doesn't look happy about doing all the work, but he does look resignedly determined.

Sam signed in. After some thought, she approached Professor Dream's desk. "Professor Dream? I'd like to do something about Ancient Greek architecture, but it's such a huge topic. Do you have any suggestions about how to narrow my focus?"

She thought about that for a minute, then nodded. "I think so. Maybe if I focused on one building in particular?"

Jack signs in and takes a seat. He pulls out his notebook and tries to figure out what he's going to do for his final.

Murphy signs in, still having no idea what the hell to do for the final.

Connor follows behind his brother, in a similar situation. He has no idea what he's going to do for his final, and hopes he figures something out by the end of class.

Sonia signs in, and glances over her proposal. She's planning on writing about the status of Athena in the Greek pantheon- specifically, how the goddess falls more along the lines of some of the male gods in terms of authority and action; parts of the Odyssey will be her reference material.

Thomasina signs her name to the class roster and takes her seat. Today she is carrying a stack of books which includes multiple smallish volumes as well as several larger and more ostentatious quartos. When she picks one out of the stack and opens it, its contents are revealed as poetry. She spends the period taking notes in her exercise book under the heading 'Greek and Roman Imagery in Poetry of the Late 18th and Early 19th Centuries'.

"Sir? For Cat does it have to be about the actual language or my final project be about the mythology of cats? I'd been thinking of doing something about cats in ancient egypt."

Re: Language lab & office hours

[identity profile] the4thsister.livejournal.com 2005-12-07 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thank you sir and I'd like to do it on the 20th if that's okay since it gives the mun time to actually research!"

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2005-12-07 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Um, sir? Since I'm in two classes, I figured I'm just propose my project idea here. I was thinking of comparing the polytheism of Hinduism and the ancient Romans' philosophy."

Janet signs in and goes to talk to Professor Dream before working on her Indo-European. "Professor? I have two options for my project, and I wanted to get your opinion on them. I could talk about the shift from oral to written traditions, using the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Iliad as my primary examples. Or I could compare the flood myths from Mesopotamia and either ancient Greece or the Bible."
