Office Hours - Abnormal Psychology

Jenny is sitting in a bare office, and is typing happily away on her laptop, updating herself on all the new computer technology she's been missing out on.

"I'm Jonathan Crane," he tells her, extending a hand, "My partner and I were one of the proposal submissions you had a problem with? I was just wondering what exactly you had against it. Also, I wanted to know what you were planning for next semester, Professor Drusilla had mentioned some ideas I thought sounded interesting and was just curious about your plans." Jonathan looks interested and attentive to what she has to say.

"Nice to meet you, Jonathan," says Jenny, shaking his hand. She opens up her laptop and studies the proposal for a minute. "Yeah," she says. "It's not looking so promising here. 'Sensory deprivation' are words that carry all these icky connotations of torture." Jenny shakes her head and wrinkles her nose at this. "And I gotta say, as a general rule, the faculty at at Fandom High? Against torture. And also, I'm against studying negative human emotions. It's high school. We should really be focusing on the happy. Maybe you could work with Medusa to come up with something a little, you know, lighter in tone?"

She takes a drink of her coffee and looks at Jonathan. "Next semester? Hate to break it to you, but you're going to have to wait until the class schedules come out just like everyone else. But you guys take a look at that proposal. It was too short to really meet the assignment requirements anyway. Just get me something by next Tuesday, and we'll be good. Think 'What would an Ethics Board say about my project?'"

"We were going to fully disclose the details of the assignment to all participants before they agreed to anything," Jonathan assures her, "And as for negative human emotions, fear is one of the greatest driving forces for human decisions and interaction. Fear drives people, we want to see what drives fear."

"Well, full disclosure is good," says Jenny seriously. "Also one of the basic requirements of the project. But fear is not what I'm interested in my students exploring. You and Medusa need to find something else."

"Ms. Calendar, with all respect, you deciding which aspects of psychology we should and shouldn't be studying in so arbitrary a fashion seems at best like censorship.

We understand that fear is not the only thing to study, and for our next project we will of course be choosing something else, so that we cover the full spectrum of the driving forces of humanity but I fail to see what you have against the study of fear," Jonathan says. He's very respectful and polite, if passionate about what he has to say.

Jenny shrugs. "Jonathan, I'm the teacher. It's my job to decide what aspects of psychology you should or shouldn't be studying. And since you're the student? I don't need to explain my reasoning to you. Even though I've already done so."

Jenny's voice is pleasant, but firm. "You and Medusa need to find something more positive. And I need the proposal by next Tuesday."

Jonathan nods and smiles what looks to be an understanding sort of smile.

"I understand of course," he says, "I simply wanted to exhaust all possible lines of communication on the matter. Medusa and I will have a new proposal in by next Thursday ma'am."

As soon as he's finished speaking he stands up, "It's been a pleasure Ms. Calendar, Psychology has always been my favorite class and I look forward to the future."

"Great!" exclaims Jenny. "Though I did say next Tuesday, not next Thursday. I look forward to seeing what the two of you come up with."
