Sociology Department Course Listings

The Sociology Department will be sponsoring three classes this semester. Class syllabi will be forthcoming, and class descriptions and schedules are available below.

I will be your professor if you choose to enroll. My name is Dr. Gil Grissom. I have a Ph.D in Entomology, but my years first as a coroner in Los Angeles, and then as a crime scene investigator in Minneapolis and Las Vegas, have given me insight into certain aspects of this field of study. Therefore, the class offerings have been tailored around my experience and expertise.

Also, please, call me Grissom. This coursework will be a relentless and intense experience, and we shall have little time for politics or formalities.

Please enroll here. New students are welcome.

Office hours for Grissom are as follows:
Tuesday 12-2pm
Wednesday 2-4pm
Friday 2-4pm

Study groups are encouraged, and a classroom partner will be required for participation in Criminology. If you do not find one, they will be assigned to you randomly by the end of the first week.

Sociology 201: Criminology

3 Credit Hours
Class Schedule: MTTh - 6:00pm - 7:15pm
Prerequisites: None

Sociology 201 will serve as an introduction to the field of Criminology. This class will study criminal behavior as it functions in society, from the etiology of crime to the effect it has on the community surrounding it. Various topics that may be addressed include the prison system, criminal profiles, the role of law enforcement in our society, and the examination of various schools of criminology.

Sociology 310: Special Topics - Death and Dying

4 Credit Hours
Class Schedule: MW - 4:00pm - 5:45pm
Prerequisites: None, although the course's subject matter may prove to be disturbing to some. Please use your discretion.

Sociology 310 will study the complex set of issues that surround the concepts of death and dying. Each week will address a specific topic through lecture, discussion, and readings. This class will have a multi-cultural perspective, and will deal with the many social ramifications of death. We will begin with historical perspectives on death and conclude with modern funerary precedures.

Sociology 500: The Sociology of Deviance

4 Credit Hours
Class Schedule: Wed - 6:00pm - 10:00pm
Prerequisites: Junior or Senior Class Standing. Appropriate coursework, or life experience, done previously.

Sociology 500 will examine the idea of deviance in modern day culture. We will seek to answer many questions - including exploring the definition of deviant, how we come to define something as deviant behavior, how these so-called deviant societies are structured, and how they may be assimilated into culturally acceptable culture. Topics will vary wildly, from vampirism, to drug cultures, to outcast political groups.

Required texts, general course overviews, and first assignments will be given out at the first meeting of each class, which will start tomorrow. Add/Drop period will be this week only.

Grades will be given for Criminology, and Death and Dying. Sociology of Deviance is Pass/Fail. More specifics will be detailed in the syllabi.

Updated class rosters may be located here.

Dr. Grissom? Er, I mean Grissom...I'm sorry, I'm southern, and I just can't call my teachers something so informal. But, either way, I'd like to sign up for Soc 310. In my life, I feel it's particularly necessary. Thank you, sire.

Dr. Grissom,

'Sociology 310: Death and Dying' sounds like it might answer a few questions of mine.

[identity profile] ten-and-chips.livejournal.com 2005-09-12 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Your classes sound fasci--brilliant! Though, I might be able to teach you a thing or two about such matters, in exchange. I only wish I was still a student, but my school days were quite some time ago.

Would it be possible to sit in and audit, if my teaching schedule permits?

As someone who has already seen a great deal of traumatic death, Sociology 310 interests me. I would like to perhaps explore different perspectives on the subject, and perhaps I could offer useful insight as well.

Sir, I'd really like to sign up for Sociology 201 please, however I wouldn't be able to make Tuesday's class because of Intro to Business. Is it still possible to sign up? I have Wednesdays free to make up for this class and can do extra work if needed.

*really REALLY wants to get into this class*
