Speech Comm

[She's in a fairly good mood today, sipping a latte and dressed in a warm sweater with extra long sleeves.]

201--Speech
Boys are stupid and girls have cooties is the topic of the week. This is supposed to be funny, people. Lighten up. Deliver, now.

*****************************

301--Non Verbal

Aristotle said that rhetoric is finding and using, in a given situation, the availible means of persuasion.

Let's discuss the rhetoric of the body in the context of what we've learned so far this term. Persuasion, trust, authority, power...all these things factor in to our subconsciuos reactions. Sometimes the message is misinterpreted between the sender and receiver because of differences in cultural meaning.

Rhetoric of body, people. Let's roll.

Lee gives his speech and hopes he disowned his sex well enough to get a passing grade.

Elizabeth moves up to the front of the classroom. "You okay?" she asks softly.

So... A good example of what you're talking about would be someone waving to someone else as a welcoming gesture and not knowing that waving is the other person's equivilent of flipping the bird?

Jack [Harkness] cracks up.

Lindsey stands up and gives his speech.

Boys are stupid, he says, because they are people and all people are stupid. Boys are just extra stupid because, well, they're boys. Girls are less stupid and have developed cooties as a way to defend themselves against the stupid boys. The boys, being stupid, believe that the cooties are harmful to them and stay far away, and that is exactly how the girls want it. It's only when the boys have outgrown a little of their stupidity that they realize that cooties are not real and are able to interact properly with the girls.

::laughs:: Trust me, the mistake works both ways. Took me a while to figure out that the middle finger apparently *isn't* some kind of a greeting.

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
*smiles* No thanks are necessary. I'm just glad that I was there, and that you're doing better now.

*Elizabeth looks at her closely, but just nods and takes her seat*

[identity profile] wannabelawyer.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
What about looking people in the eye? Here we think it's kind of rude if people don't look at you when you're talking to them, but the opposite is true other places, right?

*Elizabeth is watching CJ closely and her eyes narrow slightly*

[identity profile] death-n-binky.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
*DEATH mills about, considering this assignment. He does not, however, actually give one, because he is unclear on the subject.*

[identity profile] 2ls-in-oneill.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. I bet that caused a problem or two.

[identity profile] 2ls-in-oneill.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I know that you shouldn't do it but I don't remember why.

I did however used to know an American woman who lived in Saudi Arabia, she told me once about a time she reached for a fruit or something in a market there and had stones pelted at her because a skin gap could be seen between her glove and sleeve.

Shep's speech is short, sweet and to the point.

"Boys are stupid," he holds up busted arm that he got from playing with live steel and no protective gear.

"And girls have cooties. One named Elia actually gave me something that started turning me *into* a bug. No seriously. I have pictures."

Piper pays close attention to the discussion but doesn't have much to add.

"Boys are stupid. No matter how smart they are, they're stupid, especially about girls." Parker's eyes narrow. "Girl cooties allow us to tell which boys go beyond stupid into phenomenally hopeless. Cooties give us intuition, pheromones, better balance, and of course, reduced testosterone. That's why we're less stupid. Boys don't want cooties because the testosterone makes them think they'll be like girls if they get them. They should be so lucky."

Veronica sits near Piper and doesn't add anything either.

Allie waves to Veronica and sits down, also not adding anything to the discussion.

201

"Boys are stupid. It's a universal rule, that if you're a female who interacts with a male human in any way, you will find yourself thinking or saying this phrase at least once in your life. Odds are, you will say it much more often. Like when a boy calls you at the wrong time, or doesn't call at all, or forgets to tell you that his boyfriend was shot in the head - and lived, or that he barely escaped being vampire bait or fails to communicate because he doesn't realize people care about..."

D'anna goes silent when it dawns on her that she warmed to her theme a little too much. She clears her throat, "in other words, girls have cooties because we're mysteries to boys and boys are stupid because they weren't born mind readers." And finding no convenient hole through which to fall and hide, she returns to her seat red-faced and puts her head down in the cradle her arms on the desk.

301

After 201, D'anna'd be quiet happy to hide under her desk for the rest of the period so she contributes little to the discussion this time around.
