Quantum Physics 123: Wednesday 30 November

[The Doctor looks...rumpled, and as if he didn't sleep very well. Today would probably be a really bad day to give him a hard time about things.]

Hello. Since you seemed to enjoy Monday's deconstruction of a film so well, we're doing it again--consider this a unit on popular culture representations of time travel in the current period. Today we're watching Frequency, which is a good film, but so very, very bewilderingly wrong on multiple levels when it comes to quantum physics. I want less talking and a short synopsis of what you thought was completely buggered about this film by the end of class.

Also, you need to start working on your projects if you haven't already. If I don't see or hear about you all lurking in the library by this time next week, there will be problems. Trust me, I can find out if you've been in there or not. [slow deadly smile] If you've requested specialty literature from me or find that you need it, please notify me sooner rather than later.

((And yes, notifications are not working for me at the mo. Jack, Ten will be willing to talk to you if you have questions, i.e. 'what's going on?'))

[As soon as Jack gets to class, he pounces on Ten.] Have you seen CJ today? She wasn't in Speech, and no one was home this morning. Where were you guys last night? Did Shane warn anyone about her dinner party?

So what's up? If you're telling me I'm getting another sibling, I won't be surprised. I think I met another one last night.

Oh. But she's okay, right?

What happened? Who scared her? Liz said something about her drinking herself blind in Caritas last night. [Jack's voice hardens.] You're saying someone attacked her and she freaked out. Was she hurt? Who did it?

[OOC: And the admins were scared about CJ's two boyfriends with swords... it's the 17-year-old who finally has a mommy who is going to lose his cool...] :)

[Jack basically looks like someone's running a live current through him; uncomfortable and jittery.] Who would hurt her? Have you asked her? I'm not going to push. [There's enough of an emphasis on "push" to make it clear that he is going to do something, and his and Ten's definitions of 'push' might differ.]

[Jack's attention snaps to Ten.] Yes, I undersand. I won't ask CJ anything. I *don't* see how investigating this would hurt her, however.

Then what do we do? [Anger gives way to a bewildered look.]

Cally is here. She enjoys the film. She doesn't have anything to say, really because the mun has no clue and has never seen the film.

Jessica also watches the film. She notices a few anomalies, but like Cally-mun, she doesn't have a clue wha's goin on.

Sam sat down and watched the movie, snorting in amusement in spots. She wrote a scathing synopsis, focusing particularly on the magical ham radio, the implausibility of using the aurorae borealis and a ham radio together as a time machine (since, clearly, for that kind of thing, you needed sunspots and a 'gate), and the memory lapses (or non-lapses).

[ooc: Feel better!]

"Have a paradox or two. Or an infinity loop. If he's getting info from his son's present to change the past, then time's really screwed up and they are both stuck."

"Not to mention that if it was that easy, everyone would be bringing dead parents back to life. The ham radio industry would be booming."

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Now that you mention it, that could be a really great cottage industry. Even if we limited it to just the kids in this school, we could get a lot of takers."

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
[[OOC: Then again, as a different movie with a very roughly similar set up posits -- The Butterfly Effect -- it isn't so easy, even with foreknowledge, to change specific things in the past and have everything happen the way you intended to.]]

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, sure. I can see it now, 'Bring your dead parent back to life. Oh, I'm sorry...making a live parent dead is down the hall. Please close the door on your way out."

John comes into class, watches the movie and tries to figure out what's wrong with the movie.

That's quite the magical ham radio, isn't it? While a lot of things in the time travelling realm can be sort of explained scientifically, the fact that a mechianical device can work across time is not one of them.

Plus, Jim Caviezel sucks.

Sonia is much more alert today than in Monday's class, and watches the movie with considerable interest. For one, she's still intrigued by the relatively modern technology of radio. She notes the anomalies found in the plot but only some, as the player also has not seen this movie.
