Angel didn't even know where to begin. "Look, I know a lot has changed. And... I don't know what Draco might have told you. If it's going to be uncomfortable for us to work together, I understand."

Lily stops shuffling papers and lays everything flat on her desk before finally looking at Angel. "Draco hasn't told me anything... isn't his place to do so anyway." She pauses. "Radio broadcasts and hallway rumors don't paint a pretty picture, but I wouldn't consider them reliable sources either. Should I be uncomfortable?"

"I can't tell you how to feel," Angel said. "I lied to you. I lied to everyone. I hurt people. I can tell you now that I have a soul and that changes the landscape but... I can't tell you how to feel about that."

She nodded. "Yes. You did."

Turning in her desk, Lily leaned forward and said, "Listen, vampires can't be 'souled' or 'desouled' where I come from, and I don't have a clear understanding of how you're different now or how much you should be held accountable for past events, not that it's my place to judge to begin with." She paused. "I can't feel anything about that until I know what to think about it. That's where I'm stuck right now."

"It's not really normal where I come from either," Angel admitted. "I'm the only vampire like this in my - well, I guess here you'd say from my dimension. I can tell you that it means I'm not pure evil anymore. But the responsibility for what I did is still mine."

Lily frowned. "But that's what I don't understand - how can you, the supposedly not-evil you, be held responsible for things that 'pure evil' did?"

"Because it's still me," Angel said. "The soul doesn't absolve me of my past crimes. It just gives me the chance to try to atone for them."
