#1. Why do you believe Americans have such a higher rate of gun-related deaths?
#2. What could be done to prevent or diminish the number of gun-related deaths in America?

Death and Dying

Welcome back, everyone.

Lecture on Mass Grave Sites

But the right to exhume a mass grave or to halt tampering with a grave is not clear under international law. UN General Assembly resolution 3074, adopted in 1973, calls for States to cooperate in war crimes investigations. Articles 32 and 33 of Additional Protocol I require parties to search for missing persons after hostilities end, and otherwise assist in finding out their fate. But an individual country does not have to allow suspected mass graves to be examined.

Discussion for class: Please share whether you believe such a law should be put in place.

Homework: Please watch the film 100 Days. It will be shown on the school access channel several times before Wednesday, and is available in the A/V lab all day.

[OOC: If you haven't yet and would like to, please fill out the poll for Grissom's 2nd semester classes. You can e-mail me/him with questions or comments if you'd like. gil.grissom@fandomhigh.com. Thanks!]

Buffy signs in and starts taking notes. She isn't looking forward to the end of the semester as she feels she has learned a lot from Dr. Grissom and could learn more.

Marty sighs. "That's just the typical loophole a government operated entity would put in to protect themselves from actually giving power to an international entity."

To himself Marty thinks that this would probably be an ideal vacation for Grissom.

John comes into class and starts his essay.

I think the biggest issue that contributes to gun related fatalities in the United States is the lack of knowledge and lack of safety. In this country, when someone buys a gun, they're not required to take a class on gun control or gun safety. They're given the gun and we hope for the best. I think making potential gun owners take some kind of short class on gun safety would cut down on some of the accidental deaths that happen in the US. Not to use the old cliche of knowledge being power, but it really can help. Simple things such as locking a gun up so children can't get to the gun or proper use, storage, and care of a gun so the weapon does not accidentally go off because the owner pushed the wrong thing.

Teach potential gun owners safety by giving them knowledge. I believe that would help.

I think Americans have a higher rate of gun-related deaths because gun ownership is more common in this country. People who have more acess to guns are more likely to reach for them in anger, or to accidentally hurt or kill someone with them.

In addition, the American culture may be more accepting of violence, especially gun violence, than that of other nations.

"If the law would actually help, then yes. It can't really hurt to have grave sites inspected, can it?"

"I think that there should be a law like this because then the families might know where and what happened to their loved ones during a war or if they were kidnapped. Stuff like that." he takes a few more notes.

Cameron takes a seat and sets to work on the second topic. His player however is braindead after studying the entire day.

Rogue takes notes and ponders for a moment. "I think the law would be helpful. People should have the right to know what has happened to their family members."

[[And it would be helpful if I actually read the question right, huh?]]

Maia looked over the statistics and then wrote

Guns do not kill people, people kill people; guns are simply a method which with people utilize to make killing more efficient. I think along with background checks a simple IQ or psychological profile should be done to keep guns out of the hands of idiots.

"Governments are nothing but an experiment in public relations these days." Marty says with a smirk.

I'm sure if there was some rare indigenous beetle involved with a mass grave he'd be pretty giddy. Other than the horror of a mass grave that is.

"If it helps catch those responsible so they can be properly punished, then yes."

"To me such a thing seems utterly depraved, to say nothing of unsanitary in the extreme . . . but I suppose your modern technologies have ways of circumventing the more . . . putrid elements?"
