Sam knocked on the door to the office. "Professor Eppes? Do you have a second?"

"Sam! Certainly." He waved her inside. "You have a report for me?"

"Yes," she replied, "and a request." Sam pulled a stack of previously crumpled notebook paper with equations on it out of her bag and put it on Charlie's desk, then sat down in one of the chairs.

"It's going okay, but I'm having problems with the variables," she leaned over, showing him. "John's got some really innovative ideas about using graphs and sketches, too."

"But, really, I think I'm having problems because I'm stuck working on paper--I need whiteboards to work properly, but there's no room for them in my dorm room--I have a roommate," she said in a rush. "Is there any chance you could write me a note that I could take to residence affairs to get a single?"

"Oh! Of course." Charlie nodded. "I should have thought of that. Does the school have whiteboards, do you think? If not, you could borrow a couple of mine." He grinned a little. "I suppose I'll manage without all my boards. I prefer blackboards anyway."

"Thank you, Professor Eppes," she grinned. "I'm actually thinking of measuring the room and buying whiteboard material, then covering the walls in it. I wouldn't want to take your boards--you've got enough to do."

Charlie nodded in approval. "Good idea. My garage back home is covered from wall to ceiling in blackboards," he confessed, smiling. "It's.. handy."

He pulled out a sheet of paper, scribbling down a message for the Res. Affairs lady.

May Sam Carter, student, please have a single room, as she needs quite a bit of space to properly do her Math/Quantum Physics Independent Study?
I would appreciate it.

He handed the note over to her. "Should it say something more or is that fine?"

"I can imagine," Sam grinned, "Although I don't know that I'd be able to work that way--two of my best friends are allergic, and I assume that chalk dust is somewhere on their lists. They'd never be able to come over."

She took the note and slid it into her pocket. "I think that's enough, sir. Thank you very much."

"So...about the equations? Do you think we're completely on the wrong track here?"

Charlie grabbed the notebook papers and skimmed through the equations. "Hmm. Nooo, you seem to be on the right --" he snorted, then handed a sheet back to her. "--Track, mostly. Not sure what you were thinking there though."

Sam took the sheet of paper back and scanned it. "Honestly? I was thinking that I'd wing it until I figured out what to do with that variable."

"It does explain why Crichton's graphing technique didn't work on that equation, though. I'll have to tell him."

She grabbed a pencil out of her bag and circled the section twice, surrounding it with little arrows so she wouldn't forget.

"Chalk dust is very much on the list," says Janet, coming in hopefully just a few minutes late. "Sorry, I had to run here from the libaray."

Charlie nodded, smiling. "It's okay. Sam's just given me the report." Something occourred to him and he tilted his head. "Hey, do you work at the library?"
