Soc 201 and 310: Criminology and Death & Dying (11/21)

Grissom enters the lab in a frighteningly jovial mood. He tells both classes that classes on Wednesday and Thursday will not be held because of the holiday, but he will be holding an open lab tomorrow and there will be pie if you have any questions for him.

Criminology

Welcome to class, everyone.

I'd like you to choose one gun-related bill before Congress and share whether you oppose it, or believe it should be passed.

Death and Dying

Lecture on the Concentration Camps of the (Anglo-)Boer War, 1899-1902 (obviously disturbing)

I would like your reactions to Britian, an American ally and a nation that would fight the Nazis only 40 years later, running these type of camps in South Africa.

Enjoy your holiday, I will see you all next Monday.
[OOC: No comment notifications really, like everyone else. Feel free to e-mail me if you want my quick attention, or I'll be refreshing the page every 30 minutes or so. I'm around.]

Susan listens to the lecture with a blank face which cover her horror. When it's finished, she slumps forward until her ehad connects with the desk.

"People are stupid," she says with deep, deep conviction.

Buffy agrees with Susan.

She's obviously disturbed by this.

H.R. 221: I am in support of it. People at gunshows need to have the same regulations and waiting periods as everyone else. I think it should be passed, its to easy to get a gun now days.

((OOC: sorry forgot to put the heading))

"It's horrible. I agree, but didn't America also have Japanese internment camps during the second World War? We're not exactly pure ourselves you know."

He agrees with Marty, "Yeah, the US rounded up thousands of Japenese-Americans and put them in 'concentration camps', every country has a weird crazy reason of doing things. The Nazi's took it to the extreme, and we all just followed suite."
stykera: (creepy)

Stark listens to the lecture and lets out an involuntary whimper or two.

"It's always horrible. Always. Doesn't matter who did it, or why, or if they think it's wrong and did it anyway, they still did it. It happens everywhere. That capacity for evil exists everywhere. I heard 10,000 of my people die once, because we're not even considered people by so many others."

"People are hypocrites, who often do horrible things to each other. This is news, how?"

Allie agrees with Callisto.

Rogue is extremely disturbed by the lecture. She leaves half way through to go to the bathroom, and doesn't return until the very end of class. "It's pure evil."

"I chose H.R. 1895 which I believe should be passed as soon as possible. With the rash of school violence that's taken place lately, I believe schools should make available programs that can help students both prevent and prepare for school violence." John stops for a moment, gathering his thoughts. "I believe more drills could be taught, specific classes on dealing with weapons in school and what to do if a student sees one should be taught."

"School violence will probably never go away," John says, "but students should feel safe in school."

Archie listens to the lecture with a growing sense of sickness and horror, and by the end of it he's painfully, ashamedly aware of the uniform he has on . . . and possessed of an urge to get rid of it. As it is, he stows his hat under the desk ten minutes into the lecture, and by the end of class is feverishly plucking at the buttons on his uniform coat.

"I'm in favour of H.R.1025, 'To provide for a waiting period before the purchase of a handgun, and for the establishment of a national instant criminal background check system to be contacted by firearms dealers before the transfer of any firearm'. I think this bill would allow for a better control over who gets to buy guns and who doesn't. It wouldn't suddenly make for a perfect system, but it would be a first step in prevention."
