301--Non Verbal Communication

Hey gang. I was happy to see so many of you at the festival. Some...I saw more than I needed to. [Looks pointedly at Harkness].

Ok, this week's unit is nonverbal communication, everything we convey without words. We actullay say more with expression and body language than we do with words, and even when we speak, our intonation of what we say influences the message.

Playing poker was an exercise to help you get a feeling for body language under controlled conditions.

Today, I have this letter from the Dean. This isn't how I planned on beginning this unit, but there's really no getting around it. Angelus killed Kitty, and over the weekend some students, somehow, jammed his soul back in him. The Dean says this makes him a whole new person, and we should treat him as such. He goes on to say that violence against Angel will not be tolerated. [She looks down at the paper she's reading from, then back up] Yep. Ok. So...

We all know it's not forgive and forget. Even though you may not say what's on your mind, your body will tell it, and for people who can read it, it'll be a message worse than words. Fear, hurt, anger, admiration? Support? So much with the twitch of a muscle or the starghtening of posture.

So let's talk, gang. Non verbal...whatcha think?

Sydney comes in and has a seat, listening to what CJ has to say. "Well for some people their true feelings are visible in their face or body movements." Sydney explains. "When they are irritated, their bodies seem more tense than when they are relaxed..."

With permission, Justin takes a seat in the back of CJ's classroom; he's really intrigued by the topic today and leans an elbow on his desk as he watches CJ in her element.

Justin raises his hand slowly, "Mind if I say something, Professor?"

"As you said, people's facial and bodily expressions can give away to their real feelings. My wife, bless her soul, was very good at giving me the softest looks when she lied. She could lie to most powerful of people and not bat an eye wrong." he smiles softly, remembering Tessa's cunning abilities.

Lindsey frowns slightly at the talk of Angel(us). He is nothing if not confused by the whole thing. "Nonverbals, usually, you're not even conscious of. It's automatic a lot of the time. I think that's part of why so much is said nonverbally. It's a lot harder to lie when you're not totally aware of what you're doing."

"You can, it's just harder. You have to control things that are normally unconscious and that takes a lot more effort than just not telling the truth. But you can definitely lie through body language and tone of voice."

Lindsey grinned back.
"I'm gonna be a lawyer. So I better start practicing those nonverbal lies, right?"

Piper pondered the question for a moment, trying to ignore the news about Angelus.. Angel.. whatever name he was going by now. "It's hard to hide true feelings through use of non-verbal communication. If someone is upset about something and they try to cover it up with verbal communication, their body language will likely say otherwise."

"Probably not very well. I think it'd be hard to hide any emotion non-verbally."

"I was having a really bad day on Friday and I tried to hide my feelings from my sister. She told me I don't lie well," Piper said. "When I'm emotional, it's usually hard for me to hide it, especially when I'm angry."

*Elizabeth is well wrapped up, sneezing*

*She contibutes a little in a hoarse voice*

[ooc: Mun is at her grandparents being spoilt and is just grabbing a quick 15 minutes on the computer]

D'anna came into class with a spring in her step. (There may have been humming involved as well.) She settled in with her coffee and rucksack back in her usual seat. The professor's announcement didn't damper D'anna's good mood so much as remind her to reign it in. Looking like she was trying to recall something she'd read a very long time ago instead of only last week, she asked, "Isn't fifty to seventy percent of all communication non-verbal, Miss?"

Anya shrugs her shoulders upon hearing the news.

Better to have Angel that Angelus around, but frankly she could not care less. She looks around to observe the human reactions to the news.

"I think people give more away with non verbal cues and their actions than with their words."
