Kawalsky signed in and went to take an apple, then realized he didn't have a knife to cut it up. He was paranoid about apples. He took an orange instead.

Faith signs in and grabs an apple.

Han signed in and grabbed an orange.

Chloe signs in and ~~mourns for Lisa and her punishment, oh noes!~~ grabs an orange.

Lisa sits down ~~and figures detention will be a good time to memorize some of the Dungeon Master's Guide zomg! but thanks Chloe for her subtextual friendship :)~~ and stares at an apple.

Anders signs in and grabs a couple of oranges, and saves a seat for Cally.

Maia signed in. She snatches an apple as she goes to sit down.

Alanna signs in and grabs an apple.

Broots signs in.

*paws at the sign-in sheet unhappily*

Charlie looked surprised down at the little pink kitty. "Hello?"

Mew.

"Are you supposed to be here?" Charlie asked, reaching out to scratch the kitten behind the ear.

Mrrrew.

*Adds a collar with a name tag to the list of things she needs to talk to someone about once she finds a translator. Butts her head apologetically against Professor Eppes's hand and leaves.*

Cally signs in, grabs an orange, and sits in the seats Anders saved for her.

"Apples! I be lovin' apples!" Barbossa snagged one and hung onto it in his teeth as he signed in.

Murphy signs in and snags an apple.

"Today I'd like you to write an essay - 50 to 100 words - on what you have learned thus far in class."

Faith starts to write.

I have learned a lot in math class. I have learned about math and numbers. I learned about numerical systems from different countries and different time periods. I have learned about not real numbers that mathematicians made up to solve impossible problems. And I have learned about how to evenly divide pizza among a group and express this in a fraction.

~~Worst essay ever. Cause I can't remember math classes.~~

~~Is not memorable. Wah!~~

Chloe writes:

I've learned that mathematics is more than just taking numbers and adding or subtracting them, or doing more complicated, incomprehensible things that only math teachers truly understand. There's a lot more history to math than I ever realized, and I've learned that I understand more about the subject than I thought I would.

Maia starts to write

I learned that the idea of numbers goes back way beyond the actual writen number. The concept of zero before there was a set idea about numbers and the fact that even then the place setting of zero was important. I also liked the class with the pizza and the fact that you remembered to put teeny tiny marshmallows in the hot cocoa the other day. That was nice. Thank you.

Barbossa, munching on his apple, began to write in his strangely neat script. He didn't put it on a post-it note, though.

I be learnin' all manner o' interestin' things about numbers. I be learnin' that the cavemen be makin' maps t'keep from gettin' lost, and that the ancient Sumer...Samerita...people who's name be startin' with 'S' be writin' numbers that be not lookin' like numbers at all. I also be learnin' about fractions wit' pizza. And about lovin' this class because I be gettin' apples, which be far better fer me than the Twinkies from Professor Ted's class.

At the end of class, a piece of paper is found on Charlie's desk. It reads:

I've learned that Sudoku puzzles, even though they aren't strictly math problems, are fun. I've also learned that number systems from ~~fake~~ other worlds have good ideas that we really need to implement in our own system. Also? Imaginary number? Totally not useless (even if they are still way confusing). And lastly, I've learned that a math professor with an open mind is the best thing ever!

An orange disappears and a large piece of chocolate cake is placed beside the piece of paper.

Charlie beams at the essay, and takes the chocolate cake with him back to his rooms after class.

"Hey," Kawalsky said. "So. How 'bout them pyramids?"

"The pyramids are interesting, and very mathematical?"

He nodded. "Very mathematical. Nice and even and they even stay standing up."

*feels very sorry for Han and Jack, as one of the members of their group has fled the school and one is a cat*

"Hey, Zero" Han says, picking her up and scritching behind the ears. "Heard about the chaos in the library. You got any ideas on how to teach math to cats?"

Mowrrrr.

Han doesn't speak Cat, but he does understand felines in general. He interprets Zero's commentary as a request for more petting, which he happily indulges.

"So," she says while scratching her chin "how about them wave dynamics and stuff?"

[ooc: And now the mun rushes off to get packed for trip home to the 'rents, and has to probably, you know, not instantly usurp their computer and actually spend time with them, so... I won't be able to interact. Sorry.]

He starts to comment around a mouthful of apple, but since the others don't seem to be able to translate, he swallows and tries again.

"What, we can't start out simple, with th' scales an' their ratios?"

"Your grade does depend on this project, planning (http://www.livejournal.com/users/charlieeppes/1591.html), execution, the whole thing," Charlie reminds them.

"Hey everyone," Lisa says at she sits down.

"So I went and spoke to Marshall," she blushes quite furiously, "Ummm... Mr. Flinkman. And we discussed perhaps some basic robotics? He said we could do some really interesting things with the field, and even maybe build something that could contribute to the school. Is that something any one is interested in?"

Charlie is peeling an orange.
