Language Classes, 11/17

Languages of Europe: It looks as though most of you have some experience with French, which is good. If you do not, see me after class.

In any case, we're going to move on to a lesson on French verb conjugations in the present tense. The most common conjugation, of course, is the -e, -es, -e, -ons, -ez, -ent sequence, used in such verbs as nager and manger. But many of the most common French verbs, like aller, etre and avoir, are irregular. [Dream goes on to speak about different regular and irregular conjugations for some time.]

For your homework for Tuesday, I would like each of you to pick one regular and one irregular French verb and list all the verb forms. Extra credit for using the verbs you have picked in sentences of at least four words.

Cat: I am going to permit you to take control of the class for the day. We have reviewed many facets of cat at this point. I am unsure what direction would be the most beneficial to you for continued study. Discuss that among yourselves and let me know; ask me questions if you wish.

Rogue smiles at Dream as she walks into office hours. "I'm sorry I missed class this week." She pulls a letter written on official Xavier's Institute for the Gifted stationary. It explains her absences as an unavoidable and necessary medical emergancy, and is signed "Charles Xavier, legal guardian."

"What did I miss, sir? And, um, I don't have much experience with French, though I'm sure the similarity to Spanish will make it easier for me than for others," she says happily.

[[And mun is off to real classes; this is mostly so I don't forget...]]

Archie signs in and chooses "abbatir" and "transparaitre" as the verbs for his homework.

I would like more opportunity to do "field trips" in cat form to have more real world experience with Cat.

Archie accepts the folder with a slight twinge of alarm at the weight of it, but he nods at Dream. "If a week from today is acceptable, I'll see to it that I am ready to take the test then."

"Erm there are a few cats in town who can speak, like English, maybe we could do something with that?" she suggests pretty much lost for ideas since it's 8am and she was annoyed at Sawyer so dind't really sleep well

Moi je n'étais rien
Et voilà qu'aujourd'hui
Je suis le gardien
Du sommeil de ses nuits
Je l'aime à mourir
Vous pouvez détruire
Tout ce qu'il vous plaira
Elle n'a qu'à ouvrir
L'espace de ses bras
Pour tout reconstruire
Pour tout reconstruire
Je l'aime à mourir

Lisa is not singing Francis Cabrel

"Erm I think two of them work together in town, one's called Puss the other The Cat I think, I have to go down there later so I'll ask them to call if you like. Puss seems very nice, but I've not met the other one yet."

I think comprehension is the most important part. I mean, we--in our normal lives--aren't likely to actually be cats, so the most important thing is understanding them, like, an' bein' able to communicate with them while we're in human form.

Rogue signs in and chooses the verbs laisser and dormir. Having missed the last class, she listens carefully, but still manages to misconjugate them both slightly.

"I agree with Zero; being able to communicate across the species barrier would be very helpful. Perhaps we could explore alternate methods of correctly expressing the requisite body language?"
