Speech

[She moves stiff and in pain, but she's happy. She wears a black turtleneck under her grey suit]

201--Speech
Ok, gang. Today I want a speech about catharsis. It can be an icident of your own life, or explanitory in the abstract. As always, today is for brainstorming. Delivery on Thursday.

301--Theory

How do we know if communication is successful? [she sips her coffee, looking a them. Clearly this isn't as simple a question as it seems.]

[Jack is turning what looks like a plastic gem in his fingers, obsessively.] It's not just the passing of the message, is it? It's only a success if the sender gets the result that the sender wanted from the message.

What if the sender doesn't want a result from delivering the message?

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Then why bother? You have to want *something* from the situation, otherwise, you wouldn't go to the effort. Even if it is just an acknowledgement that something was said, something was communicated.

*shrugs* As a favor for someone else?

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Then you still want something, either on behalf of your friend, or FROM your friend for the service you are providing, namely, passing the information.

Communication is an attempt to affect other people's behavior via information, right? So a successful communication is when you get the result you intended and expected. "I'm robbing this bank; put all the money in this sack" is a successful communication if it scares everyone into standing still and you get away with a bag full of money.

*nods* Makes sense to me.

[[ooc: *pokes brain* Work damn you!]]

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[[*pats Jack* Poor boy. Any other day and I might have been a bit more alive to argue; but I have a horrible suspicion that I might be starting an ear infection. Damn it]]

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[His smile is rather twisted, but he complies.] Sure. Do I get it back after class?

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Alarmed, Jack stands up and hands it off so she doesn't have to move as far.]

[Quietly:] You okay? [His expression has changed from sullen to alarmed.]

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[The smile reassures him.] Because usually you grab things from me faster.

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[He shrugs.] How are you going to know what your limits are until you've pushed yourself past them once or twice?

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oddly, that makes his face fall.] Can I talk to you after class? Out -- [waves his hand out towards the town] -- side?

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The Perk? This afternoon?

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[That gets her a weak smile.] Thanks.
