Shop Class

Upon entering the room the students will notice that it looks like just a normal shop classroom.

Except for the fact there are a bazillion batteries sprawled out over two tables, including everything from a watch battery to a car battery.

Another table appears to have every electronic component that you can purchase at a NPC Radio Shack.

"Today's lesson/Challenge: Create a battery powered device that will make your life easier in Fandom. No Weapons."

Bridge gathers together some parts and starts to work on his project.

He's not sure what it'll be yet, but is almost certain it'll involve food in some way.

About half an hour, Bridge grins in satisfaction at the smallish circular object in front of him- a portable coffee-warmer. No more cold coffee! Yay!

After a few minutes of thoughts that brought a blush to her cheeks, Sam decided to go with her second impulse. She gathered together some batteries, some wiring, a lighting element, parts to make an electromagnetic sensor and a plastic casing unit.

She sat down to work.

By the end of class, she'd created what she hoped was the world's first electromagnetic Piratefinder. All she had to do was test it.

Cally begins assembles some various pieces, and ends up producing a battery powered, remote controlled toaster.

However, when she puts on the finishing touches, it promptly falls to pieces.

At least it didn't burst into flames.

Edward frowns in thought. He has no idea what he could make to make his life easier, so he just starts pulling pieces together and fiddling with them as he thinks.

Anders stares at the tableful of components in front of him for a long time, practically tearing his hair out for a second or two there. Finally, he ends up cobbling together a pretty basic machine that looks like an electronic stapler but really just cuts the corners off sheets of paper.

Too bad he didn't leave room in the assembly to actually put the batteries in.

He starts banging his forehead on the table.

Han starts fiddling around. He realizes what his first attempt is, and hastily blushes and disassembles it.

Finally he comes up with a battery powered vice driven machine that would allow him to dictate his papers and have them be printed out, proofread and corrected.

Re: Shop Assignment - Shep is in the Shop!

[identity profile] wraithbaitjohn.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Shep sits at a bench, pondering the plausibility of making a giant rat trap that would catch McKay and keep him out of everyone's hair.

Scratches the idea, as it may, ultimately, get determined a weapon.

An electronic beer... comes when called.

That just made his brain go to places he could either get detention for or sent to counciling for.

Shep realizes he was totally spoiled by having technology that interfaced with his genes that did things by thought in the past.

Finally getting practical, Shep creates a zombie/gremlin/frog alarm. Something that could be programed with the fingerprints (or nearest approximation of a digit) of all permissible people - say residents of the dorm - but that will send up an obnoxious alarm and deliver a taser-strength electric shock when someone unauthorized (or who forgets to code in) crosses the beam.

Wonders if he can test it on McKay.

After it's done he hopes that defensive technology doesn't count as a weapon.

*DEATH, inspired by today's speech class, begins to assemble several items, and, after much fiddling, seems to have assembled a voice recorder.

After several attempts at recording his voice, in which he captures nothing he seeks out the professor.*

"ah, crap."
John gets to work.

he makes this for the mun

It takes way longer than it should, but when it's done, John's created several things some of which he hides from Mac including a perimeter alarm for the vents in his room to prevent access by gremlins and a small voice recorder with a fairly powerful FM transmitter and removable storage.

[identity profile] krycek-rat.livejournal.com 2005-11-16 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
After sketching for a half an hour, Krycek goes to work and creates a device that may or may not clean up the popcorn mess that Bridge's improvement (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhighdorms/255731.html?thread=9588979#t9588979) to his espresso machine had created. If nothing else, it'll skitter around the floor like a tiny angry rat.

Re: Open Shop:

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridge has disassembled Kawalsky's broken iPod and is waiting for Cally to arrive so they can work on fixing it.

Re: Open Shop:

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ooooh, that's a lot of tiny bits," Cally says as she walks up. "And I have no idea how exactly they're supposed to go back together." She bites her lips and looks at Bridge as she sits down.

[ooc: Grrr. Feel free to mod Cally helping out, I have no idea when I'll have time to interact today. Stupid real school.]

Re: Open Shop:

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2005-11-15 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, this bit goes here... I think." Bridge frowns at the little pieces, pointing to one and then to a spot on the quick diagram he's drawn up. They're smaller pieces than what he's used to working with, but it's all good.

By the end of class, he and Cally have replaced all the iPod's water-damaged parts. And if one were to look at the mp3 player's menu options, they'd see a new item that had been slipped in there.

(ooc: i understand completely! hence the completely quickly-dashed-off scene above! yay for ten minute breaks between classes!)

Sam took down a piece of plywood, drew on some guidelines and dimensions after consulting a rough paper sketch, and began to cut it into segments using the jigsaw.

It wasn't a bunny habitat yet, but it would be.

Anders shows up and starts working on a couple of the rebounding panels for the Pyramid court. Really simple. No moving parts at all, just flat, slightly angled panels on stands -- so it doesn't take him too long, and he can do it by himself.

JOhn starts attacking the piles of tubestock and plate.

He hopes Carter doesn't notice.

and the mun wonders what happened in the pumpkin flinger threads

After Class

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2005-11-16 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
After class, Cally approaches Mac.

"Sir? I know you wanted me to have an idea for Thursday's class, but... I've been kinda busy frakking Anders recently, so I haven't had a chance. I swear, I'll come up with something soon, I just don't think it'll be ready for Thursday, that's all."
