Criminology: Pop Quiz!

Welcome, class.

Please take your seats. I have a pop quiz for you today. When you have completed it and turned it in, you may go. Because the new edition of Wasps and Hornets Monthly came in, and I ain't got no time fo' the jibba-jabba.

[It's a 5 Minute Mystery/Encyclopedia Brown type thing, so if you want to play it, don't read the comments until you follow the link.]

John turns in his quiz, having guessed that Phyllis Waters was the suspect due to the lack of curtain hanging equipment.

I concluded it was Phyllis Waters due to the fact that the roses did not get damaged from the other apartment and if she had been hanging up the curtains there would have been some evidence of it somewhere in the apartment. There were no curtains being hung.

Cameron immediately rules out Stan Cantone due to the nails that were painted over. When he reads the part where Grace Copeland said her husband was doing jobs for the tenants, he re-reads the bit with Phyllis Waters again and realises there wasn't any sign of her actually hanging up the curtains in the room while she claimed to have been interupted and wouldn't have had any time to clear it up. He concludes that Phyllis Waters must have done it and hands in the quiz.

"I got it wrong -- I thought his wife did it while he was planting the roses -- but I don't think the question played fair. We were never told how tall the windows are, and it's possible Mrs. Waters could hang curtains without a ladder.

Also, it never tells us the stairs to the roof don't lock after you. If they did, then the whole business about nobody having a key is silly -- he could have just gone up there and fallen off by accident."

Angela shudders. "This stuff still isn't fun to think about.

"I guessed Phyllis sort of by luck. I figured it wasn't the man with the nailed windows, since they'd obviously been there long enough to be painted over. Phyllis just seemed a little more shifty than the wife."
