Study Hall -- Thursday, November 10th

At the front desk, Sarah is teaching the puppies to attack a tiny toy robot. Most of them are gnawing cutely at it.

Due to the fond looks everybody has been casting at the corner of the room, she's brought the pool table back.

"It's supposed to be a chicken egg." Wednesday reached out and picked it up, examining it critically. "It's not, but I do believe that it is harmless. Duce took it around town yesterday and reported nothing terribly odd about it. I'm going to ask for further time with it today at class, I think. I'm not doing well with my Food Preservation project, so I think the egg might do very well as a substitute."

She put Hyde back in its basket and closed the picture book, turning to give Six an equally critical look. "I was beginning to wonder if you'd run afoul of Rover and been locked in a closet somewhere. You really ought to have some sort of signal for that eventuality."

"I do apologize, but I've been strategically avoiding the prying eyes of the Dean. His movements on Sunday ... they concern me. But today I realized that it may have been his plan to have me in hiding, so I'm out in defiance of his authority." He took her hand. "I do apologize, my dear Wednesday."

"It does one little good to plot a rescue attempt, or at least a diversionary tactic, without proper information," Wednesday told him firmly, but her fingers tightened for a moment on his.

"Perhaps we could spend some time together very soon and plan signals for various situations that are bound to arise in a totalitarian society such as this."

Wednesday nodded solemnly. "Somewhere without eavesdroppers."

"Of course." He glared disapprovingly at the rest of the students. "Cretins, all of them."

"Perhaps a stroll before dinner?" Wednesday indicated the egg. "I've been taking Hyde out to catch the evening air."

"Sounds charming," 6 said, for once completely without irony. He gazed at Wednesday, enthralled. He bit the inside of his cheek, and felt the yearning need to launch himself at his fair (quite fair) lady and do some things that were quite unbecoming in public. Poor hormonal bastard.

"Will you walk with me to my next class?" Wednesday asked him, a speculative look in her eye. She drew back her chair and rose to her feet, long skirt not quite hiding the fact that she was wearing shoes quite a bit different from her normal, practical footwear. She was noticably taller, if still quite a bit shorter than Six, and she looked rather proud of herself, in an understated way.

Unable to shrug off years of conditioning that taller equals better, Number 6's desire esteem for Wednesday rose considerably. He stood and, appreciating the fact that her head was much closer to his now, breathed in deeply, savoring her scent of death. He smiled and offered his hand. "But of course, cheri."

That bought him an actual smile, understated but still most definitely a smile. Gathering her books and Hyde's basket, Wednesday allowed him to escort her from the room.
