Language Classes, 11/09

Hello.

Classics students: We are going to continue our work in the text, "Elementary Greek," with a review of lessons four and five, which discuss the first and second declensions of nouns. Do the exercises at the end of the chapters and hand them in as homework on Monday.

Languages of Asia: On Monday, we discussed the three writing styles used in Japanese. Today, we will focus in on the first I wish you to learn -- katakana, which is used for onomatopeia, technical terms, and -- of interest to you -- words from foreign languages.

I am passing out a worksheet showing each katakana. For homework, I would like each of you to copy out each symbol and write your name at the top. Remember that in Japanese, each consonant is followed by a vowel. For example, my name would be written with the characters for da-ri-mu.

Draco signs in and begins going over his Greek notes.

Sam signs in and begins reviewing the assigned lesson. Hopefully she'll be able to get the homework done during the class period.

Anders signs in and gets to work; the Greek is coming pretty easily to him, at least.

Rogue signs in with a yawn, and starts working on her Greek.

Rory signs in and begins to scrutinize her Greek notes.

Anders looks over and smiles. "Hey, Rory. How's Vladdie doin'?"

Rory grins. "Hey, Anders. Vladdie's good. I might take him for another walk tonight. He seemed to like making friends with everyone the other night."

"He's a sociable little guy, and cuter'n hell too. You should swing by sometime before you take him out, so I can say hi." Anders tosses her a gumball with a smile, then pauses and quirks his head to the side. "Walking him's gonna be kind of tricky with the curfew thing, huh?"

Rory catches the gumball. "Thanks. And no, not really. I'm not going out at night by myself anymore. So Vladdie and I will be walking through the dorms if at all. I mean, the last time I took him out - like, outside out - was the night Kitty..."

Anders nods uncomfortably, aware of the fact that he's been much more detached about the events of the past couple of weeks than Rory clearly has. "Yeah . . . 's probably a good idea."

"So, Anders," Rory says, abruptly changing the topic, "do you have a first name? Or is it 'Anders' and you have a last name that I'm unaware of?"

Anders stares at her and nearly chokes on his gum. "Uh. I. Um. Yeah, I have a first name, didn't it make it into the paper the other week or something? I just don't like it." He leans in conspiratorially and mouths, more than whispers, "It's Samuel. But please, please, please don't call me that."

[OOC: OMG EVIL.]

Rory grins. "I'll stick to Anders, then. And that's right, I did read something like that in the paper."

She arches a brow. "And I know what it's like having a name you don't particularly like. You're looking at Lorelai Gilmore III. I go by Rory for a reason."

He laughs. "We can be name buddies, then. You, me, and Cally. But don't ask me what her name is or she'll kill me."

Rory stares. "It must be horrible," she says, wincing. "I won't ask, then, since I think I prefer you not dead."

Anders grins and scratches his nose. "Well, it's mostly just that it's not my business to tell, y'know? And thanks, I appreciate you preferring me not dead. Consider it mutual."

Murphy signs in, looking tired (what do you expect, it's still too early for his taste) but in better shape than he was on Monday.

He takes his usual seat and starts in on the text.

Connor is a few minutes behind his twin. he'd stopped off to get some coffee before going in to class. he sets a steaming cup on his brother's desk.

A grin and a nod of thanks before he shifts the text so Connor can read it as well without straining his neck.

Connor flashes a tired smile and starts reading.

Evelyn signs in and immediately begins studying.

Logan signs in and reviews

Thomasina signs her name to the roster, takes her seat and spends the remainder of the lesson reviewing the assigned material.

Sonia signs in, then begins to work on her vocabulary and assignment.

Signs in and works on his katakana.

Rory signs in and meticulously begins work on her katakana.

Lane signs in and reviews.

Work in the lab or talk to Dream here.

Parker knocks on the door, hesitantly. "Dream? I'm here about what we discussed in class yesterday...."

Miss Parker.

I was hoping you would stop by.

Please, have a seat.

Miss Parker seats herself, hands clasped, ankles crossed, looking nervous. "Thank you for seeing me on such short notice."

I am a teacher. My time belongs to my students when I am here.

I take it your dreams are back.

Dream waits to hear what Miss Parker has to say.

"I wasn't sleeping well last week after we found about Kitty Pryde's death." She sighs. "I took a nap in the library without the guardian. The same dreams I've had for years, but... much more disturbing." Her fingers clench together. "They're starting to melt into things I'm afraid of here, as well. I can't remember all of it when I wake up. I think that makes it worse."

You found a soft space, Dream says. The dreams and the reality are melting together.

It is confusing. And, yes, frightening, especially given what you have seen.

Parker rubs at her eyes. "I can almost handle the visions of my mother's death; I've had a long time to cope with that. But now, memories of Kyle keep getting confused with... danger. Cold." She shudders. "What should I do? What is a-- soft space?"

Dream runs a hand through is hair, trying to think of how to explain it.

A soft space is a place in the Dreaming where worlds collide and more than one reality can exist. This school seems to be a kind of one, so it would make sense that some dreams would take place there for the beings here.

My advice? There is a long pause. I could try to teach you some meditation techniques that would allow you to control your dreams. Or I could drop a veil over your dreams so you cannot remember them. Which would you prefer?

Thinking about it for a long moment, Parker stares at her fingers. Then looks up. "I'd like to control them. I think-- I don't think they'll go away until I can face whatever is frightening me. I just don't know how, on my own..." She makes a helpless gesture, then folds her arms. "If you could tell me how, that would be great."

You need to recognize that the Dreaming is, ultimately, malleable by those in it. You cannot have a dream you do not want or need to have.

Know that -- truly know that -- while you are awake, and you may be able to convince your dream-self of it.

Parker considers this, trying to get her mind around it. "Maybe if I had something that was real, to remind me... Not the guardian. Something that if I saw it in my dream, I'd remember that I am in control?"

Do you wear jewelry? A watch, a ring -- anything with personal significance.

Parker looks down at herself, running through her jewelry collection in her mind, then pauses. "There's a big silver ring I have... I've never worn it, it's too big for my ring finger, I'd have to wear it on my index. It was my grandmother's, very unique. That would work, I suppose?"

That will do.

Wear it. Think about it as a part of you, and you as a part of your dreams. If you wish, I could take a look at it during class tomorrow.

The ring should carry over into the dreams themselves, which would give you the control you seek.

"Thank you, I'll bring it." Parker sighs, relieved there is something she can do. "I appreciate your help with this. It feels... important."

I'm glad I can help.

"I'll stop by after class." Parker rises to her feet, looking a little more in control. "Have a good evening, Dream."
