Mathematics: All Classes: Wednesday 09.11.05 (08:00-10:00)
Charlie's much more bouncy today than he was on Friday. "Today's messages:
Wallace Fennel, you have detention on Saturday, unless you can give me a valid excuse for missing both classes last week."

1. When I'm shooting at something, I'm unconsciously using math to aim
2. A unconscious use would be singin' either with or without accompaniment, keepin' yerself on key and at th' right speed fer th' song.
3. It's not fancy math, but I have to roughly calculate the odds of me getting a good shot at the goal or breaking through the defense depending on how many players are in my way
4. unconsciously when figuring out how hard to hit something or someone
5. Unconsciously, I'm goin' with snooker. You have to work out angles roughly to make a good shot.
6. Well, I always have to remember the exact widths of bits, and stuff, when doing repair work, so I guess that's sorta-math. And I gotta make sure all the parts rotate or move at the right rates, too.
"These are all examples you gave me for unconscious use of math. Today I'd like you all to pick one or more examples and set them up as math problems. You can either use unknowns or make up a number problem."

Hathor'sLucy's jaw with your fist. Breaking T's jaw with your fist requires four times the amount of force than breaking Jack's jaw. Work out how much force is needed to break T's jaw with respect to how much force it takes to break Lucy's jaw.Re: Intermediate

Advanced
He reads aloud: "The theory of computation studies these models of general computation, along with the limits of computing: Which problems are (provably) unsolvable by a computer? (See the halting problem and the Post correspondence problem.) Which problems are solvable by a computer, but require such an enormously long time to compute that the solution is impractical? (See Presburger arithmetic.) Can it be harder to solve a problem than to check a given solution? (See complexity classes P and NP)."
"Looking into these problems and writing up a report about it, would be a good project. Alternately, you can look through the book and see if there's something else that strikes your fancy. This is practical application, so if you'd rather work on algorithms or create programs, that would be more than acceptable. For additional advice on the execution of your project, I hope to be able to set up a time for you with Dr. Carter."
