Shop Class #7

Upon entering the Danger Room Shop, The classroom finds it transformed into a metal scrap yard.

Mac sits on the remains of a car seat tossing a medium size pumpkin in the air.

"Now that we got the emitters back in order, it's time to put some of your fabrication skills to work. Today I want you to start work on an apparatus that will fling a pumpkin. It can be a catapult, trebuchet, cannon, giant slingshot... whatever you want."

Mac motions to the scrap yard around him.

"Only catch is? You can use the parts you found from the junkyard behind me. You have full use of the shop tools to build whatever it is you plan to build. You have class today to plan and build. On Thursday we'll test out your new creations."

I'll be grading your project on:
Originality
Use of materials
Accuracy
Distance

"We have open shop this afternoon, and I'll have open shop tomorrow for those who want to use that time to work on their project. If you guys want to do this in groups or on your own, it's up to you."

"Thursday morning? We make a mess."

((I'll be modding the results of the pumpkin fling on Thursday based on how you build your "flinger". The more detail? The better your results.))

Hey. *turns around and hugs Cally, grinning*

Hey. *hugs back*

So, as your new Shop TA, I'm gonna team up with you on this whole pumpkin chucker idea. You got any ideas?

Before he even starts on the catapult-thing Edward looks for Mac. "Hey teach? I'm back from my... *shudder* "vacation;" how do you want to go about the missed work/classes?"

New Shop TA? *grins and hugs Cally again, then pulls back when he realizes it might be kinda awkward to celebrate* Don't go fixin' up my grades or anything now, coach. *kisses her on the nose*

As for the pumpkin chucker . . . *waves the crankshaft* Was thinking of something we can hand-crank up to speed. Just don't know how we'd work a release mechanism.

Bridge eyes his pile of parts for a moment before moving in to thinking position to start brainstorming.

Noticing that Anders is watching, Bridge contemplates waving at his friend... but then remembers that he's doing a handstand.

"Hey, dude." he says, instead.

Nope, no grade fixing. I don't even think I'm doing grading-type things, actually.

So, hand cranked what, exactly? Are we goin' for a catapult, a trebuchet, a ballista, cannon? Specifics, champ. Gotta give me somethin' to work with.

Re: Classwork

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Good. Don't want you to get in trouble for that, or even suspected of it or anything. *kisses her nose again*

And I have no idea what any of that stuff is. *ponders a moment* A ballista, I guess?

Re: Classwork

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Anders grins and gets into a handstand facing Bridge. "Hey yourself."

Re: Classwork

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, how are we trying to fling it? Like, just a big lob, or firing it like a crossbow, or shoot it like a gun? The ballista could work, though... and the handcrank fits into that, so... good idea.

[ooc: *runs away to real class for 2 hours, eek*]

The average pumpkin is closer to 12-15 lbs than 1-2.

Trust me on that one. Thye average pumpkin, when roasted and pureed yeilds about 2 gallons of pumpkin puree for pies.

A Family of 6, eating pumpkin muffins at least once a week, will NOT consume three pumpkins in a year.

I don't know. I was thinking of some sort of wheel-like thing to build momentum up, you know, crank it in circles faster and faster, but that might get kind of too complicated and lords know what direction the pumpkin'd end up going. I guess we should try and do more of a launch thing with it instead.

[OOC: Yep -- last fling with online fun before lunch, and then the evil hard grind after that because my COMPANY EMAIL IS STILL DEAD, GRR.]

"What do you think of coffee as a power source?" Bridge asks.

Han circles the junkpile, tappin the stylus on his readout. He drafts a quick, counter-weighted design, and the readout beeps its approval.

Setting to work, he finds an old hammock which he cuts in half for the sling, a couple of poles, a frame of something and an abandoned weight set.

He rigs a trebuchet, using the duct-tape and some bits of wire and rope.

The pumpkin rests in the former hammock, and the weight is balanced to be pushed off.

He sees some cloth and duct tapes a sign that reads "My pumpkin rode the shop-class trebuchet"

Anders nods upside-down. "Best power source ever. As long as there's enough sugar."

Re: Classwork

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't think that'd be a problem as long as I don't have a Sugar Packet Deficiency Emergency. So... how's your project going?"

Re: Classwork

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Um. Not so great so far. We're just hashing out the details so far." Anders makes a perplexed face. "Something involving two stout dories and a few strong ropes, why no, I'm not listening to "Concerning Charlie Horse" yet AGAIN a crank system, though."

Re: Classwork

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hey, Elric!" calls an upside-down (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhigh/332159.html?thread=16100223#t16100223) Anders. "Where ya been?"

Re: Classwork

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Crank system, eh? Yeah, I can see how that'd work. I think I'm going to go for something a little more automated, though."

We gave him a decent send off with all our hats removed.... Nope. Me neither.

[identity profile] alchemic-bean.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Edward taps the bandage on his head (http://www.livejournal.com/users/alchemic_bean/14491.html) and frowns. "...long story. Why are you standing on your hands?"

Re: Classwork

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Anders uses his nose to point over at an also upside-down Bridge. "Thinking position. What'd you do to your head?"

Re: Classwork

[identity profile] alchemic-bean.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Works for me," Ed nods.

That bit of mundanity taken care of, he starts to root through the scrap pile for pieces.

"Thinking?" Edward repeats in disbelief. "All the blood rushing to your head is just going to make you dizzy, you know." He shakes his head. "Let's just say there were a couple of fights I couldn't avoid."

Hey there. Think we can manage this one with out blowing ourselves to kingdom-come?

Nice sign.

"Ah. Yeah. Had a couple of those myself. No head wounds, though." Anders would nod sagely, but he's upside-down and it would just look silly. "And hey . . . it works for him, so I figured I'd try it."
