Study Hall, 11/07

Dream throws open the doors of study hall and stations himself at a desk just inside.

Having noticed that the puppies and kittens seemed to be popular, He has conjured some of each from dreams and placed them in a pen next to his desk.

Of course, they are dream-creatures, and some of them may be a little ... off. For example, one cocker spaniel has wings; a kitten looks like a siamese, but is red and green striped.

But none of them are vicious. He's almost certain of that.

Lily walks into Study Hall, relieved to see that Draco is not there. She sees Jonathan and debates turning around and walking right back out.

Suck it up - I know I need to apologize to him.

She walks over and says "hullo."

Jonathan glances up and is shocked to see Lily. Well, he's shocked to see Lily without Mace in her hands.

"I Lily, umm, do you want to sit down?"

That is the absolute last thing I want to be doing right now.

"Uh, sure. Thank you, Jonathan."

She sits next to him, feeling uneasy. "So... how are you today?"

"I'm umm, I'm good. Had Ethics this morning that was fun. Pleasant night's sleep, managed to not get screamed at in my own room, all in all, pleasant evening," Jonathan tells her.

"Oh wait!" he says, looking as if an idea has just struck him, "there was that little thing where my best friend was totally slammed in the newspaper, but that's not really your concern is it?"

Dude, why ya gotta be so harsh?

Lily bites her lip. "I'm sorry," she blurts out, looking miserable. "For all of it." Great, two minutes in, and I'm already about to cry!

"I shouldn't have written to the newspaper, but I needed to get it out so I could let go and move on. I... shouldn't have snapped at you the other night. I shouldn't have told you to mind your own business. Look, I know you're Draco's best friend here, and I need to respect that."

She takes a deep breath before continuing. "But can't you even understand the tiniest bit of why I was so upset in the first place?"

"Lily, of course I understood that you were upset. I was trying to make you feel better. Clearly I was doing a bad job. I wasn't upset until you started yelling at me about how it was none of my business. I mean, we are relatively responsible adult-shaped people. I should think we'd be able to conflict resolve without the 3rd grade shouting match," Jonathan tells her, smiling a little.

"Now, I'm Draco's best friend, but you're his girlfriend, I should respect the boundaries of that relationship. When you and Draco started talking I probably should have left, or locked myself in a closet. It's a weird new place we're in. Of course we're going to screw up. Bottom line is that I like you and Draco really likes you. There's no reason we can't all be friendly."

Something about Jonathan's tone left Lily with a vague feeling he was being condescending. She couldn't be sure, though, and didn't want to make things worse.

"I let my temper get the better of me, I know. I won't let it happen again."

"This certainly is a weird new place for me. I'm just not used to the whole relationship thing yet." She sighs. "I like you, too, Jonathan. Mostly, when you're not creeping me out. I do want us to be friends - I think it would be good for us and for Draco. Forgive me?" she asked, extending her hand to shake on it.

"Sounds good," he tells her, extending his own hand and shaking hers, "for what it's worth, I'm sorry too."

"Thanks, Jonathan," she says as they shake hands. Looking down she notices bruises. Curiosity getting the better of her, her other hand immediately comes up to gently touch his wrist. "What happened?"

Jonathan blushes bright red, "Lily we're friends and we aren't going to lie to eachother right? Let me say, 'It's personal'" and here he raises his eyebrows, "and we'll leave it at that okay?"

Lily lets her hands linger at his wrist before releasing him. "Fair enough," she says, with a little smile.

Changing the subject, Lily asks, "You've seen Draco today? After the newspaper? Was he terribly cross?"

Jonathan looks relieved when she drops it, then alarmed again when she asks about Draco.

"He seemed pretty pissed, but forgiving. Way more forgiving than I thought he should be, but he's the dopey besotted one, not me," he tells her winking.

It's Lily's turn to blush now - she still hasn't gotten used to other people telling her how much Draco likes her.

"I know I don't deserve it," she says, cringing. "It was a terribly cruel thing to do. Just seemed like such a good idea at the time, and I felt so much better right after I sent it off..."

"Lily, the way I see it, if a guy like Draco sees something in you that's that great, so great a little public humiliation rolls right off, it must really be there. You must be some one who's really great," he says looking up at her before quickly blushing and looking away.

Lily blushes even more at that, feeling awkward and shy all of a sudden. "Umm, thanks, Jonathan," she says softly, gazing at him, slightly confused.

Trying to snap out of it, she says, "Well, uh, I'd better go get to my next class," but she makes no move to leave.

"You umm, have a good time in class, I'll be here, doing stuff," he tells her, flushing even more.

"Right, well... enjoy your... stuff, then," she manages, looking away at last. "Uh, right, I'll be going now." She looks down at the ground, takes a deep breath, then stands to leave.

"Right, Draco. I'll tell him that. And I'll, uh, see you around, I guess, Jonathan." Cringing at being so inarticulate and feeling 12 years old all over again, Lily walks quickly out into the hallway. Wait, what just happened there?
