Good morning. Coffee and snacks are near the back, as I'm sure you all know by now.

It has come to my attention that some of you consider this class to be boring. In the spirit of flexible education, I will rectify that.

You and your lab partner will design and conduct an experiment, any experiment of your choice, so long as it relates to geology. On Wednesday, you will present the abstract and prospectus. Next Monday, you will present the experiments in class.

Lee looks shocked at the statement that this class is boring and gives her a very sympathetic "omg I'm never bored in this class!" look.

"Lee, right?" Rory asked. "So what do you all want to do for our project?"

"I have no idea. I've never really done any kind of project like this before. At my old school school projects usually consisted of making fruit tap dance across tables."

Lee eyes Draco carefully due to the fruit comment, but turns to smile warmly at Rory. "So...we could do something with volcanoes perhaps?"

"I think someone else is probably doing volcanoes. It's really popular. We could...hmm. We could simulate an earthquake, maybe?" Rory says pensively.

"Well I could do that with magic." he says "Though I don't think Ms. Sidle would appreciate it too much. Maybe make a model of the school for an earthquake?"

Rory nods. "And with like, the geological layers under the school shifting and all. We could use that different-colored sand stuff."

Phoebe doesn't understand why someone would find this class boring. She ducks her head and starts making notes of ideas while she waits for Angela.

"Hey," Angela says. "Do you have anything you want to do?"

Phoebe smiles. "I have absolutely no idea."

"At least that makes two of us," Angela says, opening her notebook to a clean sheet. "I don't even know what kind of experiment Sidle expects."

Phoebe grins. "We could build a volcano."

[chasingangela]

"What, with baking soda and, like, vinegar? I think I did that in middle school." She grins. "It was fun. And, um, we could write a report to go with it about the science of real volcanoes."

"I think we would have fun doing that," Phoebe smiles back.

[chasingangela]

"Sounds good. When do you want to work on it? And, um, how should we divide it up?"

"Except for Monday nights, I'm pretty free after classes." Phoebe thinks for a moment. "We could do the construction together, and then split the report into sections."

"That works for me. I have newspaper Wednesday and emo club Deep Thoughts Thursday, but we could do something after newspaper. And I'll stop by the library to research whatever part of the work you want to give me."

Thomasina signs her name to the roster, then takes her seat the usual lab table and waits for Rose to arrive.

Thomasina looks up from the doodle she had been elaborating on in her exercise book when Rose sits down next to her. Hello, Rose. It would seem she means for us to prove we're learning something.

Han signs in. "Ma'am? My lab partner seems to have vanished. Roy Mustang alchemy4arson."

"Hey, um, Han, right?" Bridge asks. "I don't have a lab partner either. Wanna partner up?"

"Sure. You're Bridge, right? It's kinda hard to meet people who live in the dorms when you're grounded." Han gives him the number 4, "I'm harmless and trying to be funny" smile.

Bridge nods. "Yep, that's me. Soooo... any ideas for a project?"

"Not a one. All I came up with was making streak test doodles and trying to get credit here and in art class."

"Hm, well, what about something that involves computers? Like, developing some sort of surveying software? I'm good with that kind of stuff."

"Kid, I got computers that make yours look like blocks with letters on them. You want to try on those? It could be fun."

Bridge grins. "Hell, yes. 20th century technology is cute and all, but it'd be nice to work with real computers again."

Connor may have chosen the class because he needed to fill a slot, and the subject matter isn't something he would choose on his own, but he's never been bored. But, that's not the point. Others have been complaining, and the masses suffer.

Connor sighs and looks aorund for Sawyer. Assuming he and Sawyer are still lab partners.
