Journalism Class - Friday November 4

Spider's missing again, but the screen at the end of the classroom is scrolling a message.

Today is being given to you to explore your homework assignment and discuss. Attendance credit will not be given if you do not actually discuss. Thank you.

Homework

Beka signed into class early and pulled up the Times site on her Flexis. She found it hard to believe people were still arguing over 'intelligent design'. Evolution was so clearly true. She shook her head in disgust and started making notes about the crowded layout to discuss with anyone else who might arrive.

[identity profile] medusae-x.livejournal.com 2005-11-04 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Duce heads into class. Peering over Beka's shoulder, she snorts, "Oh good lords.. are they still yammering on about how God put dino toenails here to stump us?" She muses, "Perhaps we should go have a talk with them. We're technically older than their 'age of the world'.. might be fun."

[identity profile] valentine-tart.livejournal.com 2005-11-04 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Beka laughed. "That would be entertaining. We could go together. Since I'm from well after the world is supposed to end." She cocked her head and grinned wryly. "In case you were wondering...it doesn't. Though there are days I might wish it had. And, of course, there's the entire problem of branching universes, doubling...definitely we could mess with some people."

[identity profile] medusae-x.livejournal.com 2005-11-04 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Duce grins, "Oh, didn't figure it'd end. We're firmly in the Robert Heinlein 'people are a galactic roach problem and will expand to fill the space as long as there is space to fill' category." She looks as if she's seriously considering the idea, but sighs mockingly, "They'd assume we were insane or possessed. These crackheads aren't going to believe anything that doesn't fit their own pathetic little theory. So what's the latest 'proof' they're offering?"

[identity profile] valentine-tart.livejournal.com 2005-11-04 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"No evidence. Not a shred. Same old, same old. 'Living organisms are so complex that the best evidence is that a higher intelligence designed them'." Beka snickered. "It's not religion, though. Oh no. Because they never 'name' the designer as God. And yet, the law firm hired to represent the position is two Roman Catholics who've defended anti-abortionists and anti-gay rights activists." Her world might have its issues, but at least this had been resolved.

"It doesn't necessarily have to be Christians," Ivanova says, shamelessly butting in. "Scientific creationism based on the book of Genesis applies to Judaism and Islam, as well." She made a face. "And trust me, I use 'scientific' in the loosest of loose senses. Have you heard the theory about what caused the stratification of fossils in the ground?"

[identity profile] valentine-tart.livejournal.com 2005-11-04 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Beka turned to face the girl she'd not met. "Hey. Beka Valentine. And, no, I hadn't realized that about the other religions, but I'm not surprised. Future-bunny myself. You too, right?" She shook her head. "Do tell the theory. This ought to be rich."

[identity profile] suzotchka.livejournal.com 2005-11-04 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ivanova grinned. "Ivanova. Future-bunny, as well. I am stealing that phrase for future use." She pauses, trying to remember the whole thing. "Well, it boils down to the reason that there are stratified layers of rock is that during the Great Flood it settled in layers after the turmoil of the waters. But the things nearer the bottom layers are the ones that died first, and thus sank to the bottom first. Humans are near the top because we could swim." She shakes her head. "Not a word of a lie."

(ooc: Sorry, rl in the form of a sick roommate dragged me offline)

Duce had been listening to the conversation with interest, quirking a smile. "Nice theory."

[identity profile] valentine-tart.livejournal.com 2005-11-06 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Charming." Beka shook her head, smirking. "At least we know it gets a little better."

Oh, didn't figure it'd end.

John looks a little perplexed at the declarations just made. "You've...got a lot of secrets. But, it's not secret that this site is ugly. And cramped."

[identity profile] medusae-x.livejournal.com 2005-11-05 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
"And we could clean it up and start restricting birth rates, by making birth control more widely available.. or we can leave the dirty nest, find a new one, and dirty that." Duce notes wryly.

She nods at Del, "It's ok, we'll keep your secrets."

[identity profile] whitedeathpod.livejournal.com 2005-11-05 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Uh, I wasn't planning on revealing her secrets since I don't know them. I was just commenting on the Times site and my homework assignment. A lot of stuff on the front page. Makes my eyes go a little cross eyed."

Veronica slides into a seat next to Beka.

"What are you doing your report on?" she asks.

[identity profile] valentine-tart.livejournal.com 2005-11-06 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
"I think I'll probably do it on the layout. It's very cluttered. I found it hard to locate material quickly. You?"

She smiled at Veronica, happy to see her, even if only to talk about classword.

[identity profile] marsheadtilt.livejournal.com 2005-11-06 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
Veronica shrugs.

"Not sure yet."

She smiles.

"How have you been?"

D'anna takes her laptop out of her rucksack and logs into the site as directed.

[ooc: Probably too late in the day for there to be actual discussion though. Also? Until total otherwise, am pretending the school has a WiFi set up or something.]
