Journalism Class - Thursday November 3

There's a small sign on Spider's desk, reading "Gone to Professor Dream's class. Please spend today's class hour discussing print media vs televised or internet media and which you prefer."

Chihaya sits down and opens his book. "Print vs internet media. There seems to be a huge gap in the form of quality control between the two. In print media, the journalist is required to answer to their editor for subject choice and presentation of facts. A great deal of respect is afforded this type of accountability in the news media.

In internet media it seems that the demand for quality and leaving things to facts is much less. Anyone with an opinion can set up a webpage but their opinions are not necessarily factual and things can heavily biased toward their own leanings with no way to call them accountable for their presentation of 'opinions' as 'facts'."

Jake waves a little to Chihaya as he enters the room, then sits down at his desk, pulls up his backpack and starts putting boxes onto Krycek's desk. There's a very small box (http://pics.livejournal.com/courier_gavin/pic/000b6624), a bigger, flat box (http://pics.livejournal.com/courier_gavin/pic/000baa2a/s640x480) and a bookshaped package (http://pics.livejournal.com/courier_gavin/pic/000b8aac). He piles them up in a pyramid, and then goes to get some coffee.

Smiling a bit sadly at Jake, Chihaya waves back and spies the boxes. "Birthday?"

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Coming back with his coffee (http://pics.livejournal.com/courier_gavin/pic/0000a7xd), Jake nods. "Krycek, yeah. Of course, he didn't tell me until yesterday so I had to do, like, the cajoling of a life time in order to get his prezzies here on time." He sits down on top of his desk and tilts his head at Chihaya. "You okay?"

Angela takes a seat and takes part in the discussion, arguing for print over TV.

Duce slides into a chair near Jake and Chihaya. Grinning as she spots the boxes, she asks, "You got him, too? We got him at midnight. And there's more coming."

John signs in.

"I, myself, prefer print media. I think the advantages of things like books, articles, and the like is that they let the reader interpret the ideas in their own way. Using your imagination is cliche' as all get out but I think that really applies here. I could be seeing one thing in my mind while reading a book and another person who's reading the same book, can be seeing a totally different thing. With television and internet media, the images are there for you already and there's little to no room for creativity and imagination."

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Jake looks amused over at her. "He's going to kill me, huh? But it'll be so worth it. And I told him you guys would want to know. ...You didn't do the thing with the wrapping paper, did you?"

[identity profile] medusae-x.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"There was a thing with wrapping paper?" Duce looks amused, "No.. just had a freshman show up and knock, giving him his present, one minute after midnight."

She looks smug, "And got him in Shop class this morning, but DO NOT tell him." She ticks off on her fingers, "And there's a request to be played on the radio tonight, dedicated from all of us, and we have a cake for later embarassment. Thinking Study Hall. because Kiki created a paradox and now Duce has another pastry box she has to do something with"

[identity profile] positive-angel.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Looking from Jake to Duce, Chihaya smiled and went back to writing.

[identity profile] medusae-x.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Duce offers, "Chihaya? You want to come to Study Hall later and have cake with us? You look like you could use some cake, hon."

Even though today wasn't one of his usual days for class, he ducked into the room, looking for certain (http://www.livejournal.com/users/courier_gavin/) personages (http://www.livejournal.com/users/medusae_x/), upon whom he wished to exact vengeance. Well, probably not actual vengeance at least not until he found out their birthdays, but he'd certainly glower at them. Or something.

Spotting both targets sitting together (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhigh/315438.html?thread=15356974#t15356974), he goes to join them.

[identity profile] positive-angel.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
He shrugs. "Sure. I'll go for a bit."

((ooc: He's not being emo about the death thing. Honest. He's not even emo. Just a bit depressed.))

[identity profile] medusae-x.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
(ooc: Duce figured, that's why.. cake. Cake cures all ills. Also part of the reason she's being such a brat to Alex. So noone can gloom him to death on his birthday.)

"Cool. Cake is the cure for everything," she nods firmly.. and then glances at Jake, "Except for the people who use coffee as a cure for everything. Speaking of.. Jake, we didn't get drinks for Study Hall.. and thus, no coffee. Can you grab some?"

[identity profile] krycek-rat.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Krycek slides into his chair a moment after Duce stops talking, eyeing the pile of presents. He glances from Jake to Duce and then Chihaya (a little confused there), looking like someone who hasn't had much coffee yet.

"Okay, whose idea was the cupcakes in Shop Class?" His tone promises terribly dire events upon whosoever that particular 'gift' was from. "And what was that about coffee?"

[identity profile] medusae-x.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Duce contrives to look innocent and says, "You look like you need some.. be right back." She's up and moving for the coffee pot before anyone can stop her.

She might be giggling quietly. She might be giving Jake privacy to give his gifts to Alex. She might be putting her throat out of Alex's reach. Or, y'know, D) All of the above.

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Jake beams at Krycek and points to the pyramid on his desk. "Had nothing to do with the cupcakes, but those are from me. Open, open! ...and the door decour was awesome, man."

[identity profile] krycek-rat.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Krycek watches Duce go for coffee, then eyes the pile of gifts again. He sighs and picks up the first one (http://pics.livejournal.com/courier_gavin/pic/000b6624). Opening it, he turns it over to read all the sides. "What's this for?"

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"To help you decide things, off course." Jake snatches the dice and turns it around. "Look, like 'go back to sleep', a great advice if you ask me, or 'go to class' or 'ATM'... Although I don't know if there IS an ATM here."

[identity profile] krycek-rat.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Krycek snickers. "Probably in town somewhere, I'd think." He goes for the book-shaped package (http://pics.livejournal.com/courier_gavin/pic/000b8aac) next, opening it with a look of surprise. He blinks at Jake. "When did I tell you I liked hockey?"

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Jake grins and puts the dice back down on the desk. "You didn't. I just happened to see your name on Kawalsky's Hockey sign-up thing."

[identity profile] krycek-rat.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Krycek seems pleased, giving Jake a warmly affectionate look than any he's had since he came in today. He stacks the dice on top of the book and picks up the last one (http://pics.livejournal.com/courier_gavin/pic/000baa2a/s640x480). He shakes it thoughtfully, then opens it as well. "Stamps. For...?" He arches an eyebrow, smirking. "Journalism class?"

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yup!" Jake beams back. "Thought they might come in handy. Speaking of, going to have to watch tapes on Saturday again. Want to camp out with me?"

[identity profile] medusae-x.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Duce returns to the table with a mug of coffee for Alex. Pushing it into one of his free hands, she slumps back into a chair, crossing her arms over the back and grinning smugly.

Oz prefers Television media because it is more visual. Mweaning, that even though the telly is one dimensional, the viewer is often able to see the diminsions and practicality of an advertised object, item, or event more throughly than a still picture on a piece of paper.

Internet media is a joke, for the most part, because it's not regulated in most cases, and there are idiots out there who take advantage of that fact and exploit the medium.
