Food Tour of Fandom [Mon, Period 2]

There were neither hills nor wheels of cheese in sight today, thankfully for Bond's class. Instead, there was a fountain a square, which was a good thing, as the Danger Shop was set to a hot summer day. There were also a number of stalls dotted around the square. Bond himself was sucking on an oddly shaped ice lolly as he waited for the class to arrive.

"An interesting thing about frozen desserts," he began. "Is not only how old they are, with mentions of variations of involving the use of fruits and honeys to flavour ice and snow dating back into antiquity, but also how many of these ancient cultures such as Egypt, China and Persia, had versions. Although the effort involved in collecting and storing the ice until and through the summer months meant that before the invention of modern refrigeration techniques such desserts were luxuries, often reserved for the rich and powerful."

"And what better place to sample some of these, than Florence, often said to be where modern ice cream was invented, back in 1565."

A vast array of frozen treats in various flavours are available around the square, just try not to get brain freeze.

It was disgustingly hot and Jake had somehow managed to lose his shirt to compensate. He was also going to steadily work his way through every kind of food that was on offer because he was just that much into the spirit of this class.

"Having a difficult time cooling down?" Caroline asked, taking a seat beside him with a cup of vanilla soft serve. "Or did I miss the instruction about stripping?" Not that it was too late.

"It's hot," he complained, pouting a little. Sure, it was obvious, but if she asked, he would whine at her. Especially as he noticed her little ogling session there.

She rolled her eyes at him and his pouting as she shoved her cup into his hand. "It is hot. Way too hot for sweaters." Which she was now going to take off, revealing a tank top underneath that gave him no reason to complain. "You know, this Danger Room this is a pain sometimes. I mean, it's like, freezing outside but boiling in here...outside. Weird."

"Uh huh," he agreed, because she'd just distracted him from his frozen custard eating. "I like it better cold."

"No, really? I never would have noticed," she replied, taking her ice cream back. "But come on, you have to admit it's pretty here, ignoring the heat." He was going to be such a pain to travel with.

He hadn't actually really looked and he glanced around at the buildings surrounding them.

"Yeah, it's okay," he said with an overwhelming enthusiasm. He blinked as she took the ice cream back. "I was going to taste that."

His enthusiasm was going to knock her over. "I'm sorry, did you want it back?" She held her cup out so he could see, but not easily touch.

"No, but you should give me a taste anyway," he smirked, leaning forward. He could get enthusiastic about ice cream!

"Fine, but no complaints that it's just vanilla," she warned, spooning out a taste and offering it up to him. If she wasn't feeling nice, she'd have dropped it on him accidentally.

Like he'd care as long as it cooled him down and she'd just have to deal with his stickiness, because no way would that be contained.

"Awwww, you're a vanilla girl," he teased, quickly eating the ice cream before she could change her mind about feeling nice.

"I've been known to dabble with swirl, but I always go back to the classics," she told him, elbowing at his side a little for the teasing. "Why, are you all chocolate, all the time?"

"No, but I thought you might be," he said, looking amused. "Who'd have known. The great Caroline Forbes is vanilla."

He was just wanting to be hit now.

"Ass," she complained, shoving him against the bench as she moved to get up. If anyone was supposed to know her, it was him and he was pissing her off now.

Jake laughed and he reached to catch her hand to draw her back."Obviously I haven't been paying a whole lot of attention to your ice cream eating habits." But then they hadn't really done the ice cream thing. "I'll know to mix it up now. I just thought girls preferred chocolate."

"Well, I guess there's a lot more to the Great Caroline Forbes than you know," she told him, scooting slightly away as she rejoined him on the bench. Her chin lifted slightly as she glanced around the square.

"Uh huh," he was failing to appreciate the view as he was frowning at her and her chin raising. That never meant anything good so he reached over to tug at her ponytail. "What else don't I know?"

"Nothing, just forget it," she told him, wanting to avoid the argument that was sure to come with any explanation of her issues.

Telling him to forget something was the surest way to having him not forget it.

"Hrmph," he leaned over and kissed her cheek as peace offering. "Not gonna happen."

It half worked. "Are you sure you weren't meant to be an elephant with your refusal to forget things?"

"Yep," he nodded and shifted closer on the bench now that she hadn't shoved him off. "My ears aren't big enough. I'll leave the trunk part to you."

"Your nose is kind of flat," she told him, reaching out to give it a poke.

"My nose is not flat," he protested, frowning at her nose insulting poking. "It's just..."

He didn't know because it was kind of flat, but that wasn't his fault. "It's a nose."
