Given the number of ghost stories I've heard recently, I'm intrigued. Find an eyewitness to events at the Halloween Ball and interview them. Use their statement to either support or disprove the claim of ghosts/hauntings/possession.

Jake hugs her back, a little startled.

"Sorry," Rory says, pulling back. "I know, it's completely stupid, but the whole thing is my fault and," she shakes her head as though to clear it, "you're a good friend, Jake, even if my boyfriend kind of hates you."

Jake snorts, amused. "That's okay, I kind of hate him back. It's a mutual thing." He gives her a solemn look after sipping his coffee (finally). "And I don't believe for a second that it's your fault."

"Except it is," she says gloomily. "I let her go off by herself and if I hadn't..."

"That's silly thinking," Jake says sternly, frowning at her. "You didn't know what would happen. ...Do you know what happened even now?"

Rory shakes her head. "No idea. I just know she's dead." She swallows hard. "I do know she was attacked by someone in an alley in town, but I don't know who."

"Yeah, see, unless there's something I don't know about you, I'm not sure you'd be able to do much about that even if you were there," Jake points out, voice gentle, before taking another sip of his coffee to cover his own reaction to his words. No more Rory? Notgoodbadbad.

"But I shouldn't have let her go off. I should've insisted she stay there," Rory sighs. "And...hey, I took a self-defense class. I could've done something."

"If you had known what would happen," Jake says, lowering his cofffee again. "But you didn't."

Rory nods. "You have a point. I just...I don't know, I still don't like to think I was right there and didn't even know it was happening."

Jake nods, then points his mug towards Rory's. "Have some coffee. It might not make things all right, but it'll at least be a little better."

"Coffee makes everything better, and you know it," Rory says with a ghost of a smile before taking a sip.
