When the students came in this week, there was a passage from the eighth P'ien written on the chalk board.

There are roads which must not be followed,
armies which must be not attacked, towns which must
be besieged, positions which must not be contested,
commands of the sovereign which must not be obeyed.

"Sometimes, we must allow the distasteful thing to happen to make way for a greater victory." Ghanima was leaning against the wall, watching them from behind her glowing eyes. "Sacrifices must be made. This is most easily seen in war; sacking an innocent town for supplies, or killing civilians to prevent your position from being discovered. However, it doesn't just apply to war. What do you do when your boss, or 'sovereign,' tells you to lie about something that happened at work? Or if you cannot report a crime, because it implicates someone dear to you? Today, we discuss those choices, and how we know which battles must be fought, and which ones we must let pass us by. Sometimes it is a matter of conscience, while other times is is the one against the many."

"And others still," said Shunsui from behind the desk with very little to add to such a succinct overview, "can simply be a matter of how much sake you have left ♥." His smile was a slight bit sad, though. "Sacrifices aren't easy; that's why they're sacrifices, but there's always something you may end up having to sacrifice eventually. So it can be good to know what you may have to sacrifice in times of war, and how far you may be willing to sacrifice to maintain peace."

"We've broken you into two groups," Ghanima said briskly.

"When you gathered yourselves, we'll give you the scenario on which to discuss," Shunsui added, and his smile gained its usual crookedness, "or politely debate ♥."

Your scenario: A roving batch of bullies is picking on a homeless man. However, if you stop and intervene, you'll miss the train and be late to work. Normally, this would not be an issue, but today you are closing a merger worth thousands of jobs. If you're late, the deal falls through. What do you do? Why?

"Assuming I cannot teleport as I normally do," Raven said, because if she were making a business deal she clearly was not herself, "I would still stop to help the homeless man. A business meeting can wait and be rescheduled. Someone who is being harmed cannot."

"Not all meetings can," Karla argued--mostly to argue. "If you miss this one, it's possible the other party will walk away entirely. And then we're looking at a loss of livelihood for thousands of people."

"I would feel very badly then," Raven said, shaking her head. "But I cannot pass by someone who is being hurt and merely ignore them."

"But what about the starving children who will go unfed now that there is no work?" James said softly.

Group Two consists of: Andrew Wiggin, Bobby McCallister, Cassidy, Dana Scully, Gabrielle, Jason Todd, Mercy Thompson, Susan Sto Helit

Your scenario: A sovereign of a neighboring kingdom is weak and under attack. They call upon you for aid, but you're next on the invading army's list. Do you go to their aid, half-prepared, and risk the lives of the people you are sworn to protect? Or wait and fortify your position to better protect your own?

Jason thought about it for a moment, weighing both options. "I don't think I'd go to their aid. I think it would be better to strengthen my own kingdom, and offer refuge to any survivors from the neighbors. Together, we might be able to stop the army, and yeah, it'd suck for the other kingdom to go down, but it would be better than both of our kingdoms being defeated, in the long run."

"But they'd have that nation's resources to use, and their people to draft, once they're defeated," Scully argued. "Also, they'd have the-- um. Home court advantage, as it were."

"What if you go to rescue the other kingdom and lose?" Jason countered. "Do you think your kingdom would survive?"

"That's a good question; I think it would depend on topography and resources, as much as anything. Look at Switzerland-- if you know Switzerland," Scully corrected herself. "It managed to stay out of many wars and stay neutral simply because no one could get to it, and they practiced the policy you're talking about."

Bonus Question can be answered by anyone!

Your scenario: Your teachers run out of sake! Do you run to the Devil's Nest to buy more and have Bo throw you in detention when she finds out? Or pass on the sake run, and have the teachers assign whatever punishment they see fit in their alcohol-deprived misery?

As you do! They are there and willing to be talked to!

Shunsui still felt that the bonus scenario was a little terrifying, which would explain the constant, reassuring pats to his side where his jug was stashed.

Ghanima was indeed there, and willing to answer any questions students might have.
