i'm so over apathy club, i liked it when it was underground, now it's so mainstream, they sold out

Okay, George didn't expect it to be this hard to really get into the spirit of Apathy Club. But she had actually worn a costume for Halloween, and it didn't suck. Like, it had been fun (shut up). Oh and she had a date tonight. So those were all good things and, uh. Yeah. So.

The next best thing to apathy was being a cooler-than-it-all pretentious douchebag, so she was going to try that.

"Your favorite band sucks," she announced, to anyone / no one / the room in general.

Good thing Jono wasn't here, or she wouldn't be able to get away with that. Pearl Jam totally didn't suck.

Maybe there would be a flame war or something, or someone would get cranky and storm off. That might be fun. Or maybe everyone would be all "meh, who cares." Which would, of course, be in the spirit of Apathy Club, which made it a total win/win.

"I don't even have a favorite band," Jeremy announced to no one in particular.

He seemed okay with that. He was still not very good at this apathy thing.

"Neither do I," Squall replied.

Jeremy nodded. "Right? So... we're not that offended."

"Same question," George said. "Name something you like and something you don't, so I can approve of your taste in music or mock it for being mockworthy forever."

"No." Squall crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow. "I like music that I like, and I don't like music that I don't like, and I don't really care enough to pay attention to the artist and song names. So... whatever."

"How do you not have a favorite band?" George asked. "Okay, what kind of music do you like?"

"I just like music," Jeremy shrugged. "You know. New... music. Different kinds."

Whatever artists happened to be hot in the New York party scene.

Just for clarification, then.

"New music, like, the indie club scene where you go to a coffee house and there's a guy with a guitar writing shit, or whatever's on the Billboard Top 40 Mass-Produced Song-O-Matic?"

Look, she'd still ~~sleep with~~ go out with him if his taste in music sucked. She just wanted to know.

"Both," Jeremy said, honestly. Sort of. He wasn't so much for the coffee houses, but there were other kinds of up-and-coming indie musicians too. "Why should I choose? Best of both worlds, George."

Okay. She ... actually respected the hell out of that answer.

"You ... don't," she said, slowly. Maybe it was kind of snobby of her to turn her nose up at things just for being popular. Huh. "So you really just ... listen to whatever hits you?"

"Pretty much," Jeremy admitted easily. "It's entertainment. Why get so stuck on who's making it?"

"I don't," she laughed. "If my favorite band put out a prepackaged pile of garbage, I'd diss them for selling out."

"See, that's totally what you get for having a favorite band," Jeremy pointed out. "Pain and heartache." He leaned back in his chair again. "It's not worth it."

"You could use that to argue against giving a damn about anything," George countered. And then, with further reflection, added, "Which means you're in the right club, after all."

"Well, you're here," Jeremy concluded lazily. "So yeah, guess I am."

It took her a moment to get what he meant, and when she did, a slow smile crept over her face.

Dammit. She should not have to restrain herself from grabbing Jeremy and groping him in the middle of Apathy Club. It was really against the spirit of the thing and she'd probably be kicked out if anybody actually gave a fuck about that kind of thing.

"You're just here to mess with me, aren't you?" she asked.

"What, me?" He smiled, aiming for innocence. It might not have quite gotten there. "I would never mess with anyone."

Seifer just cocked an eyebrow at her.

"Keep it up, and I'll lock the stations at the store on teeny-bopper shit that'll make your eyes bleed."

He totally would, too.

"STP does not suck."

no one wants to hear it, but like that has ever stopped you before? whine about your pathetic life here.

okay, you can talk to george. but do so with low expectations so you won't be disappointed by the results.

Oh, Jeremy was totally going to talk to George. He was going to smile at her, too.

"Hey, George," he said. "Are we still on for tonight?"

And George was totally going to -- um -- oh! Hi, Jeremy!

"Hey," she said, and look! She was smiling back. Dammit. He was good at that.

"How do you not have a favorite band?" she asked.

Look, that was important, okay?

"... We're still on for tonight," she added. Because he could swear up and down that he secretly loved Hannah Montana and she would still want to lick his neck. Shut up.

"Good," Jeremy grinned. And then he shrugged, again. "And I just don't, man, I don't know. I don't think that kind of loyalty to a band really works for me, you know? Like... I like to be able to just go with my mood."

"You should think of it more like being a label-whore, but with music," she teased. "It's the same kind of pretentiousness, except instead of it being how much you paid for the dress, it's how early you were into that group."

The sad thing was how true that was.

"Hey, there's nothing pretentious about label-whoring!" Jeremy objected, though it was in good humor. "Does that mean I shouldn't wear the Ferragamo tonight after all?"

"No," George said, way too quickly to play it off with any degree of subtlety. Um. Oops. "Um. I mean. Wear it. Just. You know. You have your labels, and I have my post-grunge. How's that?"

"That's completely fine with me," Jeremy laughed, then nodded. "Me and my suit will come pick you up later. I gotta run now."

Figuratively. He rarely ran literally.

"Bye," George said. She was not glowing, or beaming, or any of that shit. Shut up.
