The Art(s) of War and Peace; Wednesday, Second Period [ 10/19 ].
As the students entered today, they would see the following text scrawled on the chalkboard in neat handwriting. There were no hearts or excessive swirls, so it should be pretty easy for them to guess which of the teachers had written it.
In making tactical dispositions, the highest pitch you can attain is to conceal them; conceal your dispositions, and you will be safe from the prying of the subtlest spies, from the machinations of the wisest brains. How victory may be produced for them out of the enemy's own tactics--that is what the multitude cannot comprehend.
All men can see the tactics whereby I conquer, but what none can see is the strategy out of which victory is evolved.
Do not repeat the tactics which have gained you one victory, but let your methods be regulated by the infinite variety of circumstances.
"While the joys and effectiveness of a direct attack should never be underestimated, it is important that you do not forget the importance of being devious," Ghanima began briskly. "Tzu often admonishes us to make ourselves unassailable, to maintain a secure position if at all possible. However, even the most secure location can be overcome. "
"As can the most defiant romantic pursuits ♥," Shunsui felt the need to add, with a lazy grin from behind the desk, somewhat wishing he could be saying that in reference to his co-teacher, but not really that much. It would have been fun fuel for the fire to help him topple that wall....if it hadn't been toppled. Then again, this was coming from a man who had been pursuing some of the same women for hundreds of years. They were going to break at any minute now. Any minute...
Ghanima tended to save her deviousness for playing politics. Toppling wallsand your co-teachers was fun, not work!
"'If we wish to fight, the enemy can be forced to an engagement even though he be sheltered behind a high rampart and a deep ditch,'" she recited. "'All we need do is attack some other place that he will be obliged to relieve.'"
"The obvious," Shunsui elaborated, "can only get you so far; sometimes, one must get creative and find different modes of attack...or perhaps non-attack, to be successful ♥. Though while I must admit that, while refusing to fight the enemy to the point where they surrender out of frustration has proven effective for me on a battlefield, I find I simply can't employ such a strategy in the pursuit of romance ♥." He shrugged, waving a dismissive hand. "Go figure ♥."
"So, what ways can you think of to conceal you motives? When is it to your advantage to do so, and when is it a disadvantage?" Ghanima grinned and gestured to the boxes set on tables around the room. "I want to see how well you've been paying attention."
"Although, really," said Shunsui with a smile, "I know I'm not the only one who sees the irony in asking you to reveal your thoughts on concealing your motives ♥."
[[please wait for the OCD has advanced its armies into your territory! ]]

Class Discussion: Subtlety and Secrecy - War & Peace [ 10/19 ].
- What are some good methods you can think of to obscure a plan of attack?
- What if you are from a culture where such actions are considered 'dishonorable'?
- If you are pursuing a relationship with someone, be it romantic, platonic, or business, is it morally acceptable to conceal your true ambitions? If so, when and why?
- Do you feel Sun Tzu's mandate not to repeat successful tactics is overly paranoid, or accurate?
-Is it peaceful to conceal your ambitions in the hopes that an attack can be avoided? Does the intent to attack eventually negate the notion of peacefulness?

She shook her head quiet for a moment. "I think that it is better in life to show your face, to be true to your intent. But in war, the element of surprise seems to lead to fewer dead bodies."
Oh, her sun-and-stars. Dothraki impulsiveness be damned.
