Student Council [Friday, Lunchtime]

Zoe looked like she was in a rather good mood as everyone took their pizza and got settled in today. "As far as I know, everyone survived Parents Weekend, and the events all came together very nicely, so you should all be very proud of yourselves," she said. "I know you're probably focused on fall break right now, but first, we have to talk about Homecoming. Our next meeting will be at the beginning of Homecoming Weekend, so we've got to get all our plans in order now. Then, we can focus on the vacation ahead of us." At least, that's what she planned to do.

Quinn idly picked at a slice of cheese pizza as she opened her notebook to a page of ideas.

"The last SATs for people applying to college this year are on November 5," she noted. "Will there be testing on the island, or should we set up a trip to the mainland?"

[identity profile] annieadderall.livejournal.com 2011-10-07 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Annie looked a little surprised at that. New respect for Quinn for knowing dates! "I was going to take it on the island because, well, I've never heard anyone in Fandom even say the word SATs before, so if there's not testing on island, I'm sure we can arrange something."

Re: General Chatter [StuCo 2]

[identity profile] chief-cheerio.livejournal.com 2011-10-07 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"We have time, either way," Quinn noted. "Just ... seems like something where we could help out."

"I like it. Maybe everyone knowing they don't have to be all on their own in doing it will even be encouraging." Hey, Annie was just happy to have the SAT's brought up.

"Should we set up review sessions?" Petra asked. "Maybe in the library?"

Re: General Chatter [StuCo 2]

[identity profile] chief-cheerio.livejournal.com 2011-10-07 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's a good idea whether we test on the island or off-site," Quinn agreed. "Maybe one a week for the three weeks before the test?"

Three seniors, three review sessions. It made sense. Quinn bent her head over her notebook again.

"I was also thinking maybe we could do something for people's birthdays. Just leave a flower or a cupcake for them so they feel like the school cares, you know?"

"Ooh, I really like that idea," Petra said, nodding. "Everybody's away from home, so it's nice to get some sort of acknowledgment on your birthday, you know? Plus everybody likes cupcakes...except weird people."

Petra had been bursting with ideas at the first meeting, but it had been about Parents' Weekend, and she totally got that. And this one was about Homecoming, but that wasn't stopping her; if she didn't get this one rolling soon it would be too late for the first holiday. "So, okay, I was thinking we need to do more fun stuff in the dorms to get people interacting and getting to know each other," Petra said. "Community spirit and all that. So, with Halloween coming up, what about a door-decorating contest? We could get gift certificates from places in town for prizes, and it'll give everyone a chance to get creative and make them work as a unit with their roommate. So, what do you guys think?" She beamed hopefully at the others.

"Door decorating?" Rilla repeated. "I've never heard of such a thing! Would it involve glitter?"

Probably, Rilla.

"Sure!" Petra said. "Just, you know, we'd have to make sure people knew to keep it to stuff that can be easily removed afterward, and keep it on theme. If it goes well maybe we could do it again for...no Thanksgiving's probably too quick a turnaround. But for Christmas!"

Re: General Chatter [StuCo 2]

[identity profile] rilla-myrilla.livejournal.com 2011-10-07 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Rilla's cheeks went pink: she totally would have gone after her door with a glue stick.

"Would we provide the craft supplies?"
wasthecuteone: (dubious smile is dubious)

Re: General Chatter [StuCo 2]

[personal profile] wasthecuteone 2011-10-07 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"I hadn't thought about that," Petra admitted. "On the one hand, if we don't, people with more money have an advantage, but on the other, if we keep it to stuff we supply, that limits people's creativity...I don't know."

"Maybe we could talk to the shop in town and see if they could give students a discount on this provided we, I don't know, talk about how wonderful they are and let them hand out most of the prizes?"

"Great idea. I bet Mary would go for a free meal or a free night at the hotel as one of the prizes, and I know we have extra decorations," Quinn volunteered. "It gets kind of quiet there when there's not an alumni event or a convention."

"Well, yeah," Petra said, "like I said, I was planning to see about getting gift certificates to use as prizes. It's a great way to promote interest in local business, you know, the usual pitch to the business owners. But I don't think most of the places in town really do decorating supplies, except the convenience store maybe. Or at least, I was thinking like pizza and coffee for prizes? If the hotel's got some streamers or whatever they want to throw our way that would be great, though," she added, looking over at Quinn.

"Maybe if we just put a budget cap on it, that'll solve the problem?" she suggested. "Like, I don't know, what's a reasonable cap? A hundred bucks? Higher? Lower? But then we'd have to enforce it. I don't know."

"A hundred dollars?"

"As a cap," Petra said. "...oh you're from the past, aren't you? It's not really a ton of cash now. But like I said, then we'd have to enforce it and it just makes things too complicated, I mean, what, do we demand to see the receipts before we judge? No. So, forget I said anything about a cap."

Thankfully, Toby had done a bit of research into what Homecoming involved beyond what he knew from TV and movies, though he kind of figured Fandom's version wouldn't be involving some sort of football game.

"Does anyone remember past themes?" he asked. "Just so we don't duplicate something recently done."

"Last year was dolphins in space," Quinn said. "It's ... kind of a long story."

Which meant she didn't remember how they'd arrived at it, but she suspected the coffee that week had been drugged.

"I wasn't here before then."
