Basic Strategy, Monday, 10/03

"Welcome to class," Tyrion said, once they'd gathered in the usual classroom. "I hope you enjoyed seeing your families or guardians, if they came; a few of them spoke with me. I promise I said nothing incriminating."

"This is a fairly easy week -- for me, not for you. I just have to read the names on this piece of paper, then you're to take care of the rest of it. I drew names at random to pair you up. Each pair is to spend some time together over the course of the week discussing something each of you might teach the other, and perhaps beginning some instruction in it. I don't especially care what the skill is, but please, nothing illegal, particularly immoral, or likely to get you killed."

He was betting on the last element being the hardest.

"You can either spend today as a discussion session, or leave with your partner to go work on whatever you're teaching each other. Next week, we'll discuss what we learned."

And with that, he took out the sheet and began to read.

"I am," she said, offering what she hoped might be a disarming sort of smile. "Lucrezia Borgia, at your service. It would seem we are to be paired for this assignment. Tell me, what should we teach one another this week?"

"I don't know if I have anything to teach," Simon replied, almost apologetically. There may have been a minor self esteem issue at work, there. "I have a... skill, but it can't really be taught."

"I'm certain that a young man of your considerable wit and abilities has much he could teach a lady such as myself," she said easily. "What is this particular skill you possess, if I might ask?"

"I -- I can turn invisible." It was getting a little less weird to say, just like that. Slowly. "It's a power."

"You can," Lucrezia said, watching him wide-eyed for a moment to see if he was speaking in jest. Teasing her, perhaps. "Can you show me? I mean, could you do it now?"

Please forgive Lucrezia for turning your ability into a parlor trick, Simon. She was spoiled like that.

It was still better than being treated like a freak. Without even having a power, no less.

Simon hesitated a little, glancing around, then reminded himself that he'd made the decision to be more open about this while he still had the chance. The island was special. Right.

It wasn't extravagant. He took a breath, and there was a brief moment where his head moved rapidly, in an unnatural and rather painful-looking way, but it was just for a few seconds. And then he vanished. He was still there; if she'd reach out, she'd feel him. But he couldn't be seen, or heard.

Lucrezia flinched, while he contorted. But when he stopped ...

She reached a hand out, to cover where his had been, and was amazed to find skin under her fingers.

She stared, breathless, until she managed a laugh.

"But that is wonderful," she said. "You are perfectly cloaked. God's own spy."

Simon was fairly certain God had nothing to do with it, and that the storm had some sort of a scientific explanation, no matter how bizarre and unusual.

Regardless, that made him smile. He was still smiling as he rippled back into visibility, except for that mandatory painful bit in the middle of the process. "That's what I can do."
