Ethics [Tuesday, September 20, 2011, 1st period]

"Good morning, class," Anakin said, sweeping into the room with a steaming cup of coffee. Of course he hadn't brought any to share. Are you new? "Today we talk about the power of money, and the moral issues that arise with that. Are there things that money shouldn't be able to buy? Do those things exist in your dimensions? After a quick discussion, I'll give you a hypothetical scenario as well for you to discuss among yourselves."

"Are there things money can't buy? Are there things money shouldn't buy?"

"In many developing countries, it is possible to buy a kidney for a few thousand dollars. The seller is often very poor and needs the money to support himself or his family. Is it morally permissible to buy his kidney? Should the sale of organs from living adults be illegal?"

Who are presumably not off harvesting kidneys...

Who is really hoping no one comes up with "money can't buy me love" as quoting the Beatles is cheating.

It's so sad that sleeping in until almost 8:30 felt like a treat.

Lex wasn't exactly face-palming, but he was wondering if he could avoid answering on the grounds of 'my dad's company earns more than some small countries' leaving him biased.

Lex wasn't, but who knew what other Luthors were off doing.

"Money can't buy happiness, or love, or peace," Katniss said quietly. "It can buy popularity, but only for a little while. The problem with wealth is that i breeds resentment."

Katniss was at least getting better about listening to classes and enjoying them quietly. This topic wasn't quite as painful for her as others had been, either, so she actually considered discussing it.

Peter was slouching a little in his seat. His terrible mood hadn't abated much since last week, especially not now that he'd gotten the message that his parents were probably swinging by in a week or two.

He fidgeted a bit with pen and paper and that was about it.

"It'd be nice if some thing didn't have a price tag." Apparently today was a day for cynicism. "But even if you can't directly purchase something, if you've got enough resources you can take the indirect route." Lessons from the Lionel Luthor school of business ethics.

Nathan looked like he wanted to be asleep rather than in class today. Chin in hand, he was tapping out a frantic beat with his fingers and yawning every so often.

Besides sex, money was what Nathan wanted more than fucking anything. Would that be a good answer to give? He'd have to think on that while he listened to the short lecture.

Topher was determinedly playing with a Rubik's cube and not looking up.

What? This class was boring!

Despite being preoccupied with his Rubik's cube, Topher did manage to take in at least part of the short lecture. He didn't get what the big deal was. Obviously, money was good. It bought him computer parts. Other than that, he could care less.

"No," said Topher. "If you've got it, you should be able to spend it on whatever. Can't promise you'll be happy with what you get, but that's not my business."

Oooh, look, Anakin had just hit upon Topher's future career!

"Uh, of course it should," Topher said without even stopping to think about it. "It's all about an exchange of services, right? Someone wants the kidney and he wants their money. Fair is fair."

Money was never an issue for Luke since he always just stole what he didn't have, so he didn't really understand the big deal over it. It also didn't help that he usually only carried Greek money to make calls with.

He lived a strange life.

"Does he need his kidney?" Katniss asked quietly. "Because if not, then it's his to do with as he pleases. Even if he does need it, then...well, it's still his. I might not buy it, but it is his choice."

"How so?" Anakin asked.

He had his own ideas, of course, but wanted to see Katniss think.

"Indirect route?" Anakin repeated.

Learning about the indirect routes of power had taken him decades.

"Getting out of the military? Buying children? Mail-ordering a wife?" Anakin offered.

"Yes, yes, and ew to that last one, but I don't judge."

It was true. He really didn't.

"Why not?" Topher was genuinely not sure, here.
