Creative Arts, Monday Period 2, Week 4

The students would find, upon arrival in the classroom today, that they each had their own easel set up and waiting for them. "I'd like to begin today by congratulating two of the members of our class on their election to the Student Council," Steve announced once it was time for the class to start. "Annie, Quinn," he continued, smiling at them each in turn if they were present, "congratulations, ladies. I'm sure you'll serve well and with honor in your new posts." Yeah. He just talked like that.

"But that's not art, and art is, after all, what we're here for. This week we'll be working with watercolors." Steve proceeded to give a brief explanation of what watercolors were and how to work with them before saying, "Your subject for the week, if you choose to do so, is to paint something found in nature, though if you'd like to paint something else you're certainly free to do so. You can begin now, and if you have any questions, please ask."

Bod had gotten back from the mainland a short time ago but he'd showered and changed so he didn't look the part of some woodland hermit. It was nice to have this class on Monday because it tended to be relaxing and enjoyable for him.

Quinn was surprised to be called out like that, but it was nothing she would ever complain about. She beamed and permitted herself a quick "Seniors rule!" when Mr. Rogers indicated them.

Oh, easels! Rapunzel was a huge fan of easels! They held things to paint on! She listened intently, making little notes in her head about how these 'water color' things were different from the paints she was used to. And already coming up with so many neat things to try with them!

Aww Annie liked this teacher. Don't mind her, she was just going to be over here beaming.

Bod decided to paint a lake. He'd spent nearly the entire weekend camping beside a lake so the image was vivid in his mind and he wanted to remember it for awhile.

Quinn felt like painting flowers. They were pretty and peaceful. She sketched out a vase of daisies and tulips, then reached for the watercolors to start to fill them in.

Since the paint was called water colors, Rapunzel felt she had to start with something that had water in it. And the first thing that came to mind was the beach! Which, in some ways, was just perfect for a type of paint that could easily run together and blur lines and edges.

The sandy line of the beach faded almost seamlessly into the deep blue of the water which, in turn, faded into the brilliant colors of an early sunrise.

Rapunzel found herself stopping and frequent intervals to stare at her canvas, consider the picture so far, and chew on the tip of her paintbrush.

"That's beautiful," Scully said, as she passed by from getting more water for her paints. She tilted her head. "The beach here, isn't it?"

Scully's words started Rapunzel out of her reverie, and she spun a bit sharply in surprise. But she had a huge grin on her face. "it is!" The beach, she meant. "I'm really glad you could recognize it!"

Scully took a step back so as not to get whapped with a paintbrush, but couldn't help but smile back at the girl's enthusiasm. "It's very good. I think it's the colors, and the shape of the line right there," she said, pointing to a place that looked familiar. "How long have you been painting?"

Miley didn't think that she was a very good painter, but her work actually wasn't too bad. She was working on a painting of one of the creeks in Crowley Corners, complete with the rope that she and Travis had jumped in from.

Maybe she'd add her and Travis in later on, but for now she was starting with the creek.

Freddie had decided to paint an adorable wild chimp. For some reason, that sort of thing was on his mind.

Scully was tempted to paint any one of the weird things she'd encountered in nature before Fandom, but was pretty sure her art skills weren't up to it. So she settled on the bay near Annapolis; she and her dad had sailed their small boat out of that harbor many times.

It was stormy, but not bad. Homesickness made her concentrate on the details.

Annie decided she was going to attempt a landscape. She'd seen stuff with that Bob Ross guy over the years, it couldn't be that hard.

She was finding it was a little harder to make something like a lake with mountains in the background look like more than random shapes...

Tony was there and his painting was really more of a blob. He was going to say it was impressionist.

He did not know what impressionism was.
