The Club Fair, Gym, Friday Afternoon

Though he'd heard about something like it being in the works, the club fair wasn't what Simon had been looking for.

Regardless, it was what he found, just as it was being set up. He almost left straight away, to avoid being in anyone's way, but then his curiosity won out. So, he decided to stay and take a look at the club schedule.

Couldn't hurt, could it?

"...You worried me," she said, which meant 'Yes.' "And even though it wasn't cradle's fault--I'd do anything to not have to see you like that again."

Which meant if he really didn't want to ever play again, she wouldn't make him.

Warren ducked his head and closed his eyes, lifting a hand to run fingers through his hair with a sigh. The reaction hadn't entirely been him, either, but his frustration with that game had been real enough.

"I won't be like that again. Cradle or none, I won't lose myself like I did then, Karla. Not again."

"It's not that I think you will," Karla said, leaning over the table to try to lace her fingers with his. His claws were barely given a second thought. "But it still scared me. And if cradle was a kind of trigger for that..." She shrugged. "We don't actually have to play it anymore."

Warren let her take his hand, and gave hers a little squeeze.

"No, it's fine. It's not my favorite game in the world, but I think my reaction was... way more about the fact that there was an alien disease trying to take over my brain, and all."

That sort of thing tended to make people act weird.

Like cursing and punching walls. That had been really not like him.

"How about we compromise," Karla said, giving him a smile. "You let me join the frat and I'll try to teach everyone cradle. If none of the males like it, I'll never ask you to play again."

How could you turn that offer down, Warren? How?

Was she insane?

"I think no amount of healing factor in my blood wouldn't be able to save me if I pulled that. When I die, Bobby gets all the stuff in my room, okay?"

That's a no.

Karla was pouting at him. Again. "You're exaggerating."

Of everyone who signed up, only Ben, Seifer, and possibly Goose could take him. And Ben already played cradle.

"There are way more of them than there are of me," Warren pointed out. "And frat is supposed to be fun."

... He loved you, Karla. And that was why he could be brutally honest about your stupid game.

MOTHER NIGHT, IT WAS AN AWESOME GAME!

"Well, now I am feeling all kinds of unspecial," she announced with a toss of her hair. "I can't join a frat and you hate my favorite game."

What was next? Would he insult her baking, too?

"What happens when they boyos get into that mindset that I mentioned earlier, and instead of being able to retreat, they're made to play cradle?"

Warren kind of suspected that it involved blood.

"They go out and spar with Lucivar for a really long time," Karla admitted.

And then pled injury and fatigue the next time one of the coven wanted to play.

And so, Warren's deadpan. Karla was getting it.

"So, no, no cradle in the fraternity. Poker, maybe. Cradle is strictly banned."

If anyone else in the frat knew what it was, they'd give him a medal for this executive decision.

"I've played poker before!" See? She could still join the frat! "I even kept most of my clothes on!"

...Or not.

"... And now I'm going to say no on the grounds that I wouldn't be comfortable with you being the only female losing her clothes in a room full of other guys," Warren added.

KEEP GIVING HIM REASONS TO DENY YOU.

"Well, if you opened it to other females, I wouldn't be the only one!" HER LOGIC, WARREN! BOW TO IT. "And who says I'd lose my clothing anyway. I bet I'd win."

Because she would cheat.

"It wouldn't be a fraternity if I did that, and then the guys would still need a place to go to get away from the girls for a while. Either way, we're going to be doing awesome things and we won't be inviting the ladies, Karla."

SO THAT THEY DIDN'T EXPLODE OR SOMETHING.

Karla debated offering to make it worth his while, but if he still said no, would she be stuck not making it worth his while? That would be awful for her, too.

"I don't think you're being very fair about this," Karla decided. "I'm going to need a lot of kisses and petting and snuggles to make up for it."

And she was going to try to go try to blackmail Tony into letting her anyway.

"Kisses and petting and snuggles," Warren agreed. "In spades to make up for it."

What kind of boyfriend would he be if he couldn't look past the fact that his girlfriend was, from time to time, eccentric to the point of being completely insane? It was kind of endearing.

Even if he sort of felt like a heel for following the rules.

As well he should. Karla was going to pout at him for days for this.

Or, well, she would have if other, way more important things hadn't come up.

"And maybe leather pants."

Why not see how far she could push this thing?

"We'll see."

Maybe he was already planning to get leather pants. What then, Karla?

Then she would get to see him in leather pants for however long it took her to get him out of them. There were no downsides, here.

"And a present."

Okay, now she was just messing around.

And Warren was starting to catch on to that fact! He barked out a laugh and reached one wing forward to give her a soft, feathery, affectionate bop on the shoulder.

"And does the princess have any special requests for her present?"

"Queen," Karla corrected with false hauteur. "Something pretty," she decided after a moment of thought. She caressed his wing, nuzzling it for some affection of her own. "To make me feel special."

"I'll make sure to make it a good one," Warren decided, smiling and biting his lip for a moment. He was never going to be adverse to nuzzlings. Ever. "Something worthy not only of my Queen, but for a Karla, too."

Yes, one did rank higher than the other.

That deserved something more than just some wing-nuzzling. Not caring if she was breaking a hundred rules, Karla stepped behind the table and pulled him close for a kiss.

"Too bad I'll be in Gotham by the time this is over," she murmured. "Otherwise, I might say 'Skip the present, rent us a room at the Arms.' But I have plans for the evening, so a present it must be."

And don't think she was going to let you out of getting her one, Warren. She might just decide to wait for you outside a meeting one day and demand it when you leave.
