Tricks, Cons and Bamboozles | Wednesday | Period 1

Today in class, the students were fortunate enough to have a fully-human, fully-clothed teacher. Sure, that teacher was one who had spent the weekend sobbing into an empty bottle of Bordeaux, but that was neither here nor there.

“Today,” said Neal, “we’re going to do a couple of workshops.”

The room was set up with three main tables, with various pieces of equipment in buckets on each one. Yes, the class was a bit small to do workshops like this, but that was what he was doing and that was that.

“I’ve set up three main stations for you all, and each one focuses on a different manual task that’s pretty much essential in this field. I’m not saying you have to be experts at it, especially if you want to move to the more white-collar stuff, but you’ve got to know the basics. So here we have lock-picking, pickpocketing, and forgery.” He pointed to each table as he spoke, then shrugged.

“Any questions?”

Bruce grabbed a few locks at random and opened them all inside of a minute. Really, you needed a better lock than that to delay someone who trained in lock picking with John Zatara. He could do the same thing nearly as fast even if he were upside down in a tank of water.

"Not a problem," Bruce said, grabbing a couple wires and getting to it. After setting the wire and giving it a few rakes, he turned the lock easily.

"I guess I'm a natural," Bruce joked. Okay, he said it completely seriously, but it clearly had to be a joke.

"Maybe a little," Bruce offered. Or extensively. From the best. And maybe he had several sets of lock picks hidden about his person right now, so he could easily retrieve one set no matter how he was locked up if it came to that. "And thank you."

Jack looked over at Bruce and his finished locks and scowled.

"For the record? I hate you."

No he didn't. He's just jealous.

"I'm sorry. But think of it this way. If you ever lose the key to your room and can't pick the lock on your own, at least you know someone who can help you out," Bruce offered.

"Great," Jack muttered as he almost snapped one of his tools in half. "Can I keep you on speed dial?"

"Sure. But we'll have to work out rates if you ever do need to call," Bruce said.

"What's the going rate these days? Coffee? Sushi?"

"A 'thank you,' usually," Bruce said. "I don't charge much."
